PostPosted: Sat Aug 13, 2005 3:22 am    Post subject: Internet Connection Sharing - EVDO over WiFi/Bluetooth

I recently purchased a Novatel v620 card that is active and working with Verizon. I also purchased a Syba PCI to PCMCIA adaptor with the hopes of being able to share the v620 through my wireless network or through Bluetooth (less preferable). I have a Linksys Wireless G Desktop Adaptor along with a Class 1 (higher range than Class 2) Bluetooth transceiver.

I tried bridging the connections from my EVDO and the wireless card. However, Windows XP Pro, which I am using, does not allow me to bridge a broadband connection (Wireless G) with what it recognizes as dial-up (EVDO, in this case). If anyone knows how I can go about setting up Windows to allow me to share the connection wirelessly over either Bluetooth or WLAN (my prefered method), please let me know.

I appreciate it!

I just took a look at the site that you linked to. Unfortunately, in my version of Windows, XP Pro SP2, there is no box which allows me to select "home networking connection," as appears on the provided page. Everything else is identical, except for that. If anyone knows how to share the connection in this particular OS, please let me know. Thanks!

I reinstalled the drivers for all wireless devices and networking devices. I now see the screen which Michael mentioned in the setup page. However, I am unable to detect any wireless network on other systems. Just as the other fellow mentioned on the bottom of that page, I too followed all instructions but fail to see the signal on any other system. I am unsure as to how to set an SSID (and how to establish some type of WEP/WPA/MAC limiting security). If anyone can pitch in an idea, I would appreciate it. Thanks again.

I set up the wireless network connection on the notebook with the evdo card as if I were trying to *connect to* a wireless access point w/ no encryption and an SSID of "ANY". I then made the one change that I believe is important: change the wireless setting from Infrastructure mode to Ad-Hoc mode. This means instead of looking for an access point to bond to, it looks for peers to bond to.

I also set up the connecting notebooks the same way.

Then I turn ICS on on the evdo dialup connection, and, sometimes, I reboot to make it work.

I am on a little roadtrip right now but will give your suggestion a shot when I get back. That makes sense... setting to ad-hoc. I didn't think to do that. Thanks for the info.

Thanks to Budd Walls for providing these detailed steps for sharing his EVDO Card via WiFi to other 2 other laptops. Please note these directions are for the AirCard 580, but CAN be used for any EVDO Card.

Quote:
Verizon Sierra Wireless AirCard 580
Verizon BroadbandAccess and NationalAccess

Dell Inspiron 6000 WiFi Setup for Windows XP for sharing Verizon NationalAccess connection.

First, make sure you disconnect any WiFi connections you may currently have.
You will need to have two or more laptops that are WiFi capable.
I used the Verizon Sierra AirCard 580 (I think this should work with any Verizon card.)

1. Install Verizon software

-Install Verizon NationalAccess software.
-Open VZAccess Manager and start NationalAccess (make sure it can authenticate and connect)

2. Share the Verizon NationalAccess connection.

-Go to Start->Connect To->Show all connections
-Right click on NationalAccess-BroadbandAccess and select Properties
-Click Advanced Tab
-Under Internet Connection Sharing, click Allow other network users to connect through this computer's...
-In the Home networking connection drop-down select: Wireless Network Connection. (Note this will change the
Wireless Network Connection IP settings to a static address. Not sure why, but don't change it back to DHCP.)
-Close settings and go back to the VZAccess Manger. Close connection and re-connect.

3. Setup a peer-to-peer wireless WiFi network.

-Go to Start->Connect To->Show all connections
-Right click on Wireless Network Connection and select Properties
-Click the Wireless Networks tab.
-In the Preferred networks box, click the Add button.
-Enter a SSID name: NAnet or whatever you want.
-Set Data encryption to: Disable
-Make sure you click the box at the bottom for: This is a computer-to-computer (ad-hoc).... (This allows other
WiFi computers to see the Wireless network.)
-Click the OK button to save everything.
-Close everything down and restart the computer.
-When the system comes up give it a while and you will see the wireless network trying to connect to the
peer-to-peer network you created. The first time it will take a while, so be patient.

4. Setup remote laptop to connect to your peer-to-peer WiFi network.

Again, make sure you do are not connected to any WiFi networks. If so, disconnect them before continuing.

- Start the second laptop. XP should see the new peer-to-peer WiFi network and should try to connect to it.
It will take a while to connect and acquire the network address. Don't try to help XP, this seems to take awhile.
Wait till XP says the wireless network is now connected.

- Go to My Computer->My Network Places->View Network connections.
- At the top of the list you should see Internet Gateway: NationalAccess-BroadbandAccess...
(This is the share connection from the host laptop.)
- If the Internet Gateway shared connection is not shown, you need to setup up a home or small office network.
To setup the network:
- Click the: Setup a home or small office network option. Click the next button.
- XP may show disconnected hardware, if so, click the Ignore disconnected network hardware box.
- XP should see the shared connection to the host system. Don't change XP recommendation to use this connection.
- Click next till finished.
- Now you should see the Internet Gateway icon for NationalAccess-BroadbandAccess...
- Start Internet Explorer and you should be able to browse the network via the shared connection.

Notes:

- Seems like Venturi compression is not used when browsing the net from shared laptops. I think VZAccess
Manager is by-passed when accessing from a remote system and Venturi is not used.

One more thing: my setup was working for 4 days last week, then it stopped working correctly. As far as I know, I hadn't changed anything, but who knows what microsoft's auto-updates might have done to the XPSP2 machine. Smile

I ended up redoing everything (as above) and it still wouldn't work.

I then ran the network configuration wizard and chose the best options I thought seemed to match (I'll have to document this later). The only difference in the setup was now the internal WiFi card connection was listed as Bridged (the EVDO connection was and had always been listed as Shared).

Not sure why the EVDO connection's ICS screen didn't automatically set on the WiFi connection when I chose the WiFi connection as the one to share EVDO over.

Well, I followed this exactly with a toshiba u105 and a brand new oqo 01+. I couldn't get it to work. This is about the 5th time I have tried various people's instructions on how to share your evdo signal from one laptop to another. 10-12 hours of wasted time. Frustrating to say the least. I guess I need to wait for the KR1 to be released.

I got the signal to show up to the oqo and it connected for about 2 minutes, but I couldn't pull up a web page and about 2 hours of trying to make it work, I realized it just wasn't. I have a KPC650 card and I formerly tried it on a PC5220 card and different computers with someone elses instructions. I think I found those on evdoinfo some time back. Oh well, if anybody knows of another set of instructions, then I would try it on two brand new computers or two used ones...either way, would love to know why this is so difficult.

My theory is that internet communications is under siege from both domestic and offshore hackers right now -- and there are so many operating system 'updates' coming out that this is like trying to hit a moving target. The WinXP O/S made a provision for DSL/Cable broadband connections, but what we are trying to do is very different. And not only is the O/S changing, each OEM manufacturer adds its own layer. For example, Toshiba's networking setup doesn't look the same as the detailed Dell example. I'm putting the project aside for now, but with the comment that we shouldn't count on a low cost consumer EVDO server (the KR1 or DI-725) anytime soon. I'd bet that it is going to take an operating system change to make it work reliably. There will not be a profit in any product where half the people bring it back "because it doesn't work right on my computer."

PostPosted: Tue Nov 29, 2005 10:03 am    Post subject: Additional Infomation

For those still having trouble using ICS after reading the guide here,
http://www.evdoinfo.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=59&Itemid=63
like I did, some additional information...

When you successfully set up ICS on your EVDO machine, your network connection now acts as a DHCP server so you must disable the DHCP server that is a part of your router.
After and disabling the router's DHCP server and rebooting all the non EVDO machines on your network, you should at least see the EVDO connection on the non-EVDO machines.

At this point on the EVDO machine, open a DOS box and type the following command:
nslookup
This should return an ip address to you. ex. 66.174.6.7
On your non EVDO machines, right click on your network connection and select properties. Double click on 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)'. Select 'Use the following DNS server address' Fill in the obtained ip address from the above step, in the 'Preferred DNS server' slot. Click 'OK', click 'OK'.
This is what I had to do to get mine up and surfing the web.
Hope this helps.
Administrators feel free to edit to make it easier to understand.

I took an additional step that I didn't see mentioned above, to get three laptops to share EVDO (Verizon BroadbandAccess, Audiovox 5740 card) via ad hoc wifi and no router (posting over this connection now Very Happy ):

In the Network Properties window, Advanced tab, where you enable Internet Connection Sharing via the checkbox that says "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection," at the bottom of this window there is a button labeled Settings... Click that. The Advanced Settings dialog appears. In this dialog I enable both DHCP options. Before that the client PCs could not reliably obtain IP addresses and I had to set them manually. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. Since I started enabling DHCP via this dialog on the host computer I've had no problems.

Thanks for posting that info, that may be the missing piece on why it is not working for some.

I would suggest using your router as a simple Ethernet switch first until you can successfully share the Windows XP computer with another computer on your network. You'll need to turn off the router DHCP server to do this. Then connect all the computers on the LAN side of the router (nothing on the WAN side). Then just run Network Connection Wizard on the computer with the EVDO modem. This should work.

I assume you ultimately want to put the EVDO modem computer on the WAN side of the router and the other computers on the LAN side? If so, then you can try to configure things to work with the EVDO computer on the WAN side of the router once you have basic connection sharing working. I've never tried this before (I use a switch not a router because my EVDO computer is also the main server for my LAN), but I don't see why it wouldn't work. First glance is that I'd expect the EVDO computer using ICS to have an IP of 192.168.0.1 while the router would have 192.168.1.1. I would look into this area.

Hope that's of some help.
