- Your City, State
Lancaster, Ohio

- Primarily used in one location or travel mostly
One location

- number of Verizon Accounts you have on your account (phones & cards)
1 Card and 1 Phone

- on the $59.99, $79.99 or a Corp/Employee Discount Plan
79.99 plan originally, then switched to 59.99 when it came out

- what was your typical use (e.g. SlingBox, downloading huge files, gaming, etc.)
Three computers on a KR1 for home office. One salesperson sending emails mostly and using a web admin tool. Another PC was a person that played poker mostly and checked webmail. Last PC was a night time user for online school and MMO's (EQ2 mostly). No movie downloads or streaming that I know of. Some laptop builds that may have had some Windows Updates and some IBM updates a couple times.

- How long you had the Verizon Account before getting 'the letter'
Been a customer for around 6 or 7 months. Give or take.

Latest to be added to this Post. Seems something significant about May 30 for that is the day Verizon canceled my service as well. I have been aware of this string in the forums for quite some time, consequently when I had trouble logging into my account in the Denver area and had to call Verizon Tech support I asked if it was possible I was locked out of my account due to bandwidth usage. At that time the response given to my inquiry was that it was absurd. "Unlimited means unlimited" is the quote. Sadly, I didn't take the name of the technician down and have the feeling that it would make no difference. Other reports about making the internet a multi-tiered environment seem alot more plausible.

I drive truck and from what I understand, they cut my service off before sending out any type of letter informing me of disconnection. When asked what I use the card for I explained that I use it to download podcasts and view news clips... before I could continue I was informed that I was definitely in violations of TOS. Apparently you are to use Broadband for only Intranet, email and casual surfing.

Why would anyone need to fork out over $60 a month to use only a crippled version of the internet?

Don't know where I'm going for service next.... Because I'm all over the country I am looking into the slower Edge network.

TOS seems rather vague and infact I have yet been able to find a TOS for broadband/nationalaccess on the VZ website.

More than anything I'm so upset with what I feel is clear and blatant misrepresentation on Verizons part. What part of Unlimited don't they understand?

Once I read "the Letter" I'll post more.

As a letter recipient, here are my stats:

- Minneapolis, MN
- Used in rural home, no cable or DSL available, and work, consultant client site
- EVDO was my only account with Verizon
- $79.99 Plan
- Mostly used for developer software downloads, MSDN, and email 24x7
- Had my account for 49 days

I also have T-Mobile, Sidekick II (and original since Oct 2002), Treo 600, both GPRS unlimited data, I teathered the Treo to my PC with no issues, upgraded to EDGE PC card and used 110mb speed and many GB a month with no complaints from T-Mobile.

I bought a PC5740, liked the service but needed better signal, returned it and bought the $200 from the Verizon store KPC650.

I am a .Net developer and download MSDN software all month long, VNC
and FTP into my work servers on oddball ports, upload database
backups. The 40x normal usage of 256MB a month is absurd for $80/month. I have 10MB+ work email attachments several times daily.

Do I need to call and beg, or is explaining what the salesperson
explained unlimited to be a waste of my time, because I am getting
cancelled anyway?

I was going to drop the T-Mobile Sidekick II and buy a Verizon Treo 700 next month. Hello customer retention.....

A side question comes to mind... "How are you black listed? Lets say you're canceled ... you get away with paying no termination fee. Ok a week later you call up and ask to activiate the card and start a new service and let's say use a new credit card. Wonder if they'd catch it.

A waste of time. I tried it and they are evidently paid to hang on and listen to the pathetic whinings of us Mensch, and then at the end close the call with that insipid "Is there anything else I can do for you? Well thank you for (allowing us to abuse you) using verizon wireless."

Is there any reason to thnk that Sprint won't evenually do the same as verizon? After all, these companies always reserve the right to change the TOS anytime they feel like it.

I'd switch, but I don't want to get back into the same boat with another company Rolling Eyes

- Your City, State
San Antonio, TX

- Primarily used in one location or travel mostly
Stationary (traveling rarely)

- number of Verizon Accounts you have on your account (phones & cards)
had 3 (all moved to Sprint now)

- on the $59.99, $79.99 or a Corp/Employee Discount Plan
$59.99

- what was your typical use (e.g. SlingBox, downloading huge files, gaming, etc.)
Downloading software, music, and online gaming
VPN to maintain servers/software at place of employment

- How long you had the Verizon Account before getting 'the letter'
Voice: 5 years
Data: 5 months

Sprint guaranteed that I would not get killed for online gaming and downloading software and even music from my pay music service. Their TOS is much, much more lenient than verizon's.

I'm sure everyone reading this thread is already aware of this (why did you send me a copy of this as a personal message as well?). My complaint with Verizon is that the salesman who signed me up for the service was very clear that the service was "unlimited" and could be used in any way I wanted and to any extent that I wanted - there was no ambiguity in his statements. I have no problem that Verizon cancelled my service, but I do have a problem with their sales practices and their unprofessional manner of informing users 3 days prior to termination. And, of course, the ridiculous claim that the average user spends $80/month for 256MB/month of access.

Someone earlier in this thread mentioned that Verizon corporate was made aware of this thread. Are you a Verizon employee (I can't imagine who else would post and email copies of the TOS)? If so, will you please comment on the practices of your retail store salesmen?

In an effort to educate/inform and create lively discussions, I just posted the following story on EVDOinfo.com:

Use SlingBox, Get Your EVDO Terminated

Please understand, there are 2 sides to this issue and I hope the above article touches on both sides. Also, lets understand that this article is very heated and follow the
EVDOforums.com Rules and be nice to each other. Any users who are rude to others (or are here just to pick a fight), will be banned from posting.

While I do agree you have a right to be upset; unfortunately my experience is that this is not just lmited to Verizon. While I've not tried them all I have been in most of the major wireless stores and found the typical part time employee has little or no knowledge of the services or the products they are selling. A day before Sprint EV-Do was available in this area I stopped by the a local Sprint store and asked about EV-DO / BroadBand celluar ... I even tried 1XRT and got a look like I was from the moon. They were TOTALLY clueless except to quote me their cellular phone plans.
This is not limited to wireless services either; I hate to admit this but I don't buy anything anymore unless I've spent a half a day researching it on the the internet at the very least. I've now been in several local stores ready to make a major purchase only to be confronted with some that knew absolutely nothing about what was being sold and just to walk out and eventually make my purchase on the internet after having done my own research.

I spent some time on the phone with one of the Verizon people regarding the posts being made in this forum. They have not terminated my service, but I was concerned and made the phone call. We talked about their recent practice of canceling service for some people.

He explained some of the reasons why service is cancelled. There are two reasons that stuck with me.

1) Streaming Video, I assume he meant a lot. What with advertisements now days, it is hard to avoid the little ones

2) Networking your EV-DO Card so other computers can access the internet via the card.. Even just connecting your desktop to your notebook to access the internet on your desktop is a no-no. You can of course transfer files from your notebook to your desktop and visa versa, but don’t access the internet from your desktop using your card/notebook.
So, I’ve stopped doing that, it was just web-browsing and research, file downloads I did and do on my notebook,. I thought no harm no foul, I’m just using the card with my desktop while my notebook was idle, but they don’t approve of the practice. That was one question I never asked the sales person, I asked alot of others. But I never asked the sales person if it was okay to network the card to my pesonal desktop.

By the way is that something they can detect? (Hello, guys and gals at Verizon) I can use my notebook for the same things it is just more convenient to use my desktop. The Desktop has a larger screen and keyboard, plus my favorite sites are already loaded into IE on my desktop.

Another concern that I raised was the reported usage on my bill, compared to what my system reported. They had a figure that was two to three times what I figured I actually used. Their number was five to six times what was figured by VZAccess Manager program, but I know that program is reporting low. He was not sure why there was such a large difference. I raised the possibility, that there are a lot of bytes lost/damaged due to transmission errors and that these lost bytes are part of Verizon’s total. He said it was true that they counted everything transmitted, but that doesn’t mean we receive it.

Hope this information helps.

Tom

Why would it matter if you use your notebook or desktop and how would your service know?
