|

I have a windows xp machine with all the new updates.
I cannot get the Compass modem to install. I had a older Sierra 595U that worked ok. Got a new 597 usb and everytime, it is unrecognized by windows and asks for the drivers to be installed. I've install Sprint SmartView - the latest.
I downloaded the manual driver MUX install from Sierra, and it seems like the installation goes fine and immediately at the end - a Windows popup comes up with the request for drivers for the unrecognized usb device.
I have: uninstalled and reinstalled. I have: deleted usb ports and reinstalled. I have: manually tried to install drivers. I have: switched to other usb ports. Always rebooting.
The Compass will not install and asks for drivers. The Sprint software detects no device.
Other than re-imaging xp - what could I do? |

Nope. It does not show up as a modem. Windows popsup a message to install drivers always. Even though I've downloaded and installed drivers from Sierra and even though I've installed the Sprint app.
Also, The DirectInstall from the usb port seems to install, then windows popsup a message at the end to install the unrecognized usb modem. It knows that it is a Compass modem and says so on the windows messages. But the driver will not install.
I tried to go back to the Sprint store and get a Novatell usb and it would not install, same thing. I know now of four people with the same problem and symptoms as me. No one knows of a solution yet. Except re-imagining the machine. Something hoses on the install. |

why don't you try going back to a date before you did all the installing/reinstalling via System Restore. Then download the latest SmartView from www.sprint.com/downloads and give that a try. _________________ evdo-tips.com |

For some reason, even going back in time before the install and restoring the system did not work. still same problem, although I understand it works for some people.
I went to get help with a tech at work, and he had seen four this week with same problem. 1 home machines and 3 Office machines. Seen more in prior weeks, so this is a problem with this compass. He said sometimes the system restore + making sure the prior modem is out of device manager works. this did not work for me. I even tried installing a Novatel at the Sprint store, thinking there's some funked up thing with the sierra registry entries. Still same problem. can't install drivers.
I had a prior searria usb modem on my system, but it was uninstalled, I thought. It was working before (with a weak battery), I was upgrading. Yes, it was one with a battery. I was installing the Compass. Nothing was in my device manager and I searched my registry for a prior entry and the word "sierra." Not there. Still, windows demanded the drivers and they seemed to install, but the device was never recognized.I got manual drivers from the sierra site and they would not install - seemed to, but at the end, windows wanted me to install drivers for it. I had the most current Sprint software too. It never recognized a device. Uninstall, rinse, lather, repeat. I have a dell d620 with current xp.
I just reinstalled windows xp after 3 days of not working. I have the compass working now, but this is a mystery and eating up a lot of time. What a joke that I have to go to this extent to fix it. |
