Where does it say in the article that they are only using UMTS right now and will upgrade to HSDPA next year?

- UMTS will initially provide 200Kbps - 320Kbps data rates
- Next year, Cingular will upgrade to HSDPA and that will boost speed to 400Kbps - 700Kbps
The service will be called Cingular's BroadbandConnect and uses HSDPA/UMTS technology. |

BTW, I've done more testing and can get better ping times on EVDO depending on site.
I can get about 160-170ms to evdoforums.com and local websites on Sprint S620 card. |

How did testing go? Since the Cingular announcement didn't include Minneapolis/St. Paul, I'm interested in if you found coverage. Also was the Digital Antenna DA4000 and the Wilson 812201 dual band inline amplifier required for service, or does the stock setup work?
Have a great one. -Matt |

PC Mag reviews Cingular's HSDPA. Considers it underwhelming and not living up to promises. Calls coverage maps not exactly honest.

It will be interesting to see if they can catchup to EVDO in coverage. They have to literally forklift upgrade every cellsite to HSDPA because it is not GSM-based. |

Houston we have a problem...
The PC Mag review is a bit off. HSDPA roaming between the USA and Europe isn't going to happen since Cingular (T-Mo ?) UMTS/HSDPA uses 850 & 1900 MHz here (though there is more spectrum up for auction this summer). Its 2100 MHz over yonder. Plus there is the 850/900 1800/1900 incompatibility thing too for GSM/GPRS/EDGE. So unless you have a device that does 850/900/1800/1900/2100 (penta band GSM?) and 850/1900/2100 UMTS/HSDPA you're not gonna be roaming. And that's not even touching on the SIM lock / network "branding" limitations already happening with simple old quad band GSM devices.
STILL... woule love to see HSDPA get rolling. It may promise lower latency and the benefit of simultaneous voice and data. Hit the road with a KR1, EVDO cards with Sprint and/or Verizon, and a HSDPA/EDGE card on Cingular (KR1 support pending) and you're *probably* gonna be covered. ;] |

Cingular announces HSDPA for Tulsa and OK City this year. First announcement since December. At this pace, Cingular may get HSDPA to a few more markets this year. They claimed 100 markets by end of year at first, then recently said 'most major markets'. Well, there will apparently be at least two.
