NEW: If anyone else has had success with the ec228 and any one of the cradlepoint routers, please post
I now use an ec228 and mbr1000 combination and I am very pleased with the results. Very reliable, strong wifi strength, easily portable. I have been getting satisfactory speeds even in the country where I live. Beats my parents hughesnet business system hands down.
see more here: http://www.evdoforums.com/thread10487.html
Does anyone know if there is another router that will work with this modem or has anyone attempted this?
Thanks!

| I have a ec228 alltel modem . Picked up a CradlePoint CTR350 EVDO Router pluged it in and it workes perfect. Using vista on hp pavillion notebook . Windows finds it as a ctr 720 but it works great . I also have a linksys router plug into it and am using it with my other wired system. I used network magic on it to find it. it also works great now. I get better download speed if I log on to the ctr 350 (ctr 720) directly when on the internet instead of going thru the linksys router. Use that to acsess the other system. ninetoes |

ninetoes you are my hero!!! It was suggested to me to return the ec228 and get the um150, but it seems I or my wife have misplaced our receipt so right now that is not an option. Now that I know for sure this modem will work with the ctr350, we can both use the internet simultaneously. Very excited!!! |

I've had an ec228 for a few months now. I didn't order a router because I didn't know for sure if it would work with one (not officially supported). My dad goes to alltel and gets the um175 and orders a mbr1000. It does not work with the alltel version of the um175.
While on the phone with 3gstore support (Troy I think), I mention I have an ec228. I plug it in and presto, I get a solid mdm light. I am now running 3 wireless computers off my ec228.
I was told they (Cradlepoint) was working on getting the alltel version of the um175 to work with the mbr1000. They support the um150, and I've heard of people using the um175 through verizon, but it does not work with alltel right now.
Hopefully they will support the um175 soon, and I will be able to test the load balancing with both modems on the alltel network.
I hope this will be helpful, because Troy from support did not know the ec228 would work with the mbr1000. I will take pictures to prove and post them and speed tests when possible.
I will continue this thread here:

I just want to verify before I go out and buy a CTR350 that the Huawei EC228 (Alltel) works with it. I know that Cradlepoint doesn't support this combination but I was told by them that it might work. They have just not tested it yet. I do know that the CTR500 supports the EC228 (ALLTEL). Please verify this combination works (CTR350 and EC228).
Thanks,
Jeremy |

I cannot verify myself the ec228 works with the CTR350, but I can verify that it works with the MBR1000 very well. I get excellent speeds and during the last hurricane our office cable internet was out so I used this combination to run 4-5 computers everyday for about two weeks. The mbr1000 has great wifi signal strength which stretches a long way outside my house to my shop and beyond and supports draft n also I believe.
Your right, neither cradlepoint nor 3g store (at the time of my purchase and before the 1.4 firmware release) will officially say that any of the cradlepoint routers will work with the ec228 on alltel network. When I called them I plugged it in while on the phone with them and it worked.
The signal strength lights on the mbr1000 router do not light up to show signal strength, but I have been getting very respectable speeds with the ec228 & the mbr1000. I used a combination of directly hooking up my latptop to the ec228 and my cell phone to find the best spot for the setup (I hung the ec228 through the blinds in a window or taped it to the glass) and it works flawlessly.
I really want to try the load balancing on the mbr1000 with another modem, but I have not been able to do so yet. When I do, I will post that info on my other topic.

actually, that was true when YOU got your router, but since then cradlepoint released firmware 1.4 for MBR1000 / CTR500 that provide officially support the Alltel EC228 |
I was just about to reply and say the same thing. Both Cradlepoint and 3gstore say the CTR500 and MBR1000 support the Huawei EC228 (ALLTEL) I just want to see if anybody has been sucessful with the CTR350 and the EC228. I also wanted to know what the range is for the CTR350 since you can't add an external antenna.
Thanks,
Jeremy |

Ooops! Your correct! I have not been keeping up and after my post saw the new firmware update. sorry!
Firmware release 1.4 supports both the um175 and the ec228. Today is a good day for me!
Time to update firmware and see if it will properly load balance the ec228 and the um175 on the alltel network!
And thanks to Cradlepoint for officially supporting current Alltel cards! |
