I had high ping times playing wow on my Pantech 500, it was a problem with how ACK's are handled. Basically a wait of .2-.5s for another response, as this was original coded by the author.
The problem is World of Warcraft is uses TCP/IP packets. Most games use UDP. It was supposed to be fixed last winter in a patch but I didn't see any fix or game and I kept my work around in place. I changed the TCP Acknowledgement for the Network Connection so it would immediately send the response.
I wonder if something similar is happening here. Via the wifi connection it's holding the packet waiting for something and it's timing out waiting?
Here's the original long post by many users in the wow community. http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html;jsessionid=6D142F53CD395BCB4509BE0A27C91BC5.app11_05?topicId=3271071466&sid=1&pageNo=1
It basically get's worse with higher latency connections. It may now be working as they coded that around in their game. I cannot say, but I am not going to revert my change hoping so, and I get 120 to 350 latency in busy and high traffic areas. Which is okay for me. I even tend to raid with 25 others and do just fine, with an -94DB on average connection.
Here's the author of the ACK responses write up on why and how it works. Maybe this can give insight.

About a week ago, I tried playing WoW with the 1.2 firmware again...and it let me play flawlessly for about 10 minutes, but then started the latency issues.
Anyone who has updated their MBR1000 with the 1.31 firmware w/ WoW Hotfix and had it fix their problem...we need to talk. |

I have been playing fine with no disconnects with the new firmware hotfix.
Of course right now WOW is having their some problems with certain servers because of the new WOW patch. |

I recently purchased the MBR1000 and with a Verizon UM150 modem was unable to play WoW. I was having the same issues as others...high latency and eventually a disconnect from the game.
After applying the hotfix the problem was fixed. I've played several hours with very little latency and no disconnects.
Thanks for posting the hotfix in the forum! |

The Mbr file from this link no longer seems to be able to download. If someone has the hotfix available on their HDD or another live link for it, I'd love you if you could email me at scschwa@gmail.com.
Much thanks
