I believe it was karyn that made the post concerning the replacement of all KPC680 cards with a new model: the KPC680c.
When I saw the post, it certainly peaked my interest as my parents (who are using Alltel Axcess) have been experiencing a disconnect issue (where the service would randomly drop and wouldn't reconnect unless the card was pulled out and reinserted).
Went to the local Alltel store and they were very friendly and aware of the situation. In fact, two of the girls that worked in the store had KPC680 cards and were experiencing the same issue with the disconnect issues. I asked if the replacement would fix the issue and they weren't sure if it would, but they were hoping it would.
A few key punches and the new card was in my hands. I'm using the card right now and so far, no disconnects... I've been using it for about an hour and a half. However, we'll certainly know tommorow... the card is coupled with a CradlePoint CRT350 and stays on all the time. My mom will call me in the morning complaining that she can't check her e-mail if it has lost its connection.
Anyway... for the people who have a KPC680, you should take it down to Alltel and get them to replace it. They should be familiar with the swap and if it goes as smoothly as my replacement did, you'll be in the store no longer than 10 minutes.
I'll post up tommorow and let ya'll know... |

Any official documentation on this? What if you've had the card for 8 months (like me)? Will it renew your contract to get the replacement? Is it considered to be a warranty replacement or, better yet, a recall?
I can't go into an Alltel and tell them I heard it on a website that wasn't theirs. |

Thanks for the update, LordFlux. I'll be interested in your results since I'd really like to move to the KPC680 and CTR500 combination.
Whyzeman -- here's the post LordFlux is referring to, complete with link to the original thread on HoFo. My impression is that it doesn't matter how long ago you bought the card. |

No contract renewal is necessary. And I believe it's been considered a recall. I purchased my card on eBay of all places and they had no problem replacing it (they didn't ask where I had purchased it, just if I had purchased it from an authorized Alltel reseller. I told them no and they said they would process it as a generic return.)
Like I said in my first post, they should be aware of the situation. In fact, the very first thing I said was, "I have a KPC680..." and the employee said, "You must be here about the replacement."
If there's any misunderstanding, tell them to check their Alltel web portal where Announcements and Recalls are posted. When they pulled it up on the computer, it was 2nd from the top when I was in the store.
Anyway, I called my mom about 10 minutes ago as I haven't heard from her. She said the Internet was still up and running. I'll post again tommorow, but so far that's 17 hours without it cutting off... that's a new record! |

| Just wanted to make another post and say that my parents Internet access hasn't been interrupted yet using the KPC680c card. That's two full days that it has been working. |

| It finally disconnected this morning and wouldn't reconnect. So that's 5 full days that it was connected. I just updated the CRT350 firmware to the latest version... don't know if that'll help it go past 5 days, but we'll see. |

| In case any of you want to know the Kpc 680 c card is also rev a. The 680 b card would not connect to rev a for me. If you just got a kpc 680 card in the last few days you might want to look on the tag on the bottom of the box and make sure you have a "c" card before your 15 days are up. I live just outside of Rogers, Ar and the rev a speeds were a bit sluggish in town. When I got home "which is not rev a yet" I tested the speeds again and they seemed sluggish for rev 0 too. I decided to check the PRL and it was 40031 so I bumped it up to 40036 and the speeds improved greatly. If any of you are interested I will try to remember my KR2 and card tomorrow and recheck the rev a speeds with PRL 40036 when I am in rogers. I have been reading the forum for a while now and thought this might help someone so I made a account and posted. Nice to meet you all. |

Here are a few speed tests I ran from in front of a convenience store on HWY 62 in Garfield, Arkansas. These test were done using my KR2 router and my "KPC 680 build c card." I was never able to get rev a to work on the b cards I had, and as the Alltel tech support guy told me the Cards released after July 1st are c cards and do work at rev a speeds. I hope this will be useful for someone.
Sorry about not getting results up sooner.
As You can see these test were done at about 6 pm on a Friday evening. There was no external antenna used. I did do a few test in Rogers, Arkansas that same evening at about 5 pm. They were a bit slower on the download. I suspect that had a lot to do with the time of day and the fact that I was about a mile maybe less from Wal-Marts corporate office, NWACC campass and I-540. I suspect the tower was pretty loaded down at that time and location, and I did not have any external antenna connected. A external antenna probable would not of done any good anyway. I suspect the tower I was hitting was one of the towers that appeared to be well under a mile away. |

| I called my local alltel store today to ask about an upgrade. They told me absolutely not, unless your account is up for renewal. He told me there was no replacement for the kpc680. Go figure. Atleast my account is up for renewal in september. |

Did you call an Alltel company store or did you call your local agent location store. It took me three different tries to get the new c card. I had to return my first two cards in the first 15 days to the agent store (they told me when I asked on the second card it was a c card, it was not). I ended Up having to go to a Company store where they all wear Alltel shirts to get a KPC 680 c card.
Look on the bottom of the box before you buy one. It tells you if it is an "a,b, or c build of the card."
I also think I would just get a second account for one or two months. It sure would suck if Verizon took over in August, and you got a shinny new 5 GB cap plan in September.
Good luck on what ever you decide to do. |

I was able to exchange my three-month-old KPC680 card on Saturday for a KPC680c, no problem. The C card seems to solve the problem with the card going dormant and never waking up. It also connects much more quickly when powered on.
My speeds are up to, but that may be because I made some improvements in my outdoor antenna the same day I got the C card. |

I got my KPC680 back in november, didn't have any issues replacing it with a KPC680 rev c at my local alltel store. Dormancy issue seems to be resolved, now if I could just get alltel to stop dropping my connection every 12 hours |

I was told yesterday by a rep at the local Alltel corporate store that anyone who bought their card from a corporate store can bring it in and they will "DOA" the old 680 and get them the new 680c on the spot.
The situation is a little different if you went through an "Authorized Agent" instead of a corporate store. The corporate retail store told me they couldn't touch my card, because I got it through an authorized agent, not a corporate retail store. I contact the agent I got my card from, who talked to Alltel and was told that tech support had to troubleshoot the card before a replacement could be authorized.
I contacted tech support, they had me add an AT code to the modem initialization string, then restart the modem. The card dropped into dormant mode almost immediately and tech support made a note on my account and told me to take it to (you guessed it, didn't you) a corporate retail store for replacement.
Other than wasting my time by trying to troubleshoot what is, obviously, a known issue, it wasn't too painful. I should be getting my 680c sometime today. |
