Anybody been able to play GTA IV on a PS3? I have Sprint EVDO and a Kyocera KR1 router. Every time I try to join a server I get kicked off, the message is something like "One or more clients could not be contacted."

I'm thinking it has to be my KR1 or EVDO in general.

I have a 595U and I can play just fine. I had that message a few times but I've played full team death matches without much lag.

I use a Wifi adapter from my computer though. So I have to turn my computer on first then dial in and connect my air card. Then I turn the Wifi Key on then launch my PS3.

What type of signal are you getting it sounds like its to unstable and disconnecting on you.

My connection ranges from 1.2MB down and 150 ping to 500KB down and 400 ping. It changes at the drop of a hat.

I just wanted to see if anyone had it working at all before I started doubting it was possible.

I think I'm going to switch to Verizon now that Sprint has the cap, they have a tower much closer to me and should give me a more consistent connection.

I'd say your fluctuating ping times are whats causing the disconnects or hang ups.

Watch though a 2 hour session of GTA IV on a full server chewed up close to 400MB for me. Granted I don't have to worry about any overages just possibly getting throttled.

Although test 1 worked well I used 7.5GB last month and I'm not throttled. Rural FTW!

Sometimes I get a good connection for hours, other times it craps out after only a few minutes. I'll just keep trying and keep my laptop nearby to monitor the ping.

Its that damn PS3 that is the problem, get a Xbox 360 and you wont have any problems. Just messing with you! I play Xbox Live every day with my U720 and 99% of the time never lag. You get what you pay for most of the time. Yes you dont pay to play, but that is the down fall on the PS3. We pay the $50 a year to play on dedicated servers and that is why you never hear too much about lag on the 360. I play COD2,3,4, RSLV2, TW08, GTAIV, Saints Row, and many others on Xbox live. One of the most important thing when playing online is make sure you have Rev A in your area. If you dont then you are going to lag like crazy. Also, I just read it again that your speeds and pings change a the drop of a hat. Make sure you dont have anything else using the bandwidth in your house if your going to play online. With the KR1 router being wireless, this could also be the problem. Make sure you have it secure with a password. If it isnt anyone near you with a wireless device can use your bandwidth. Any kind of P2P program running in the back ground will mess it up real quick, even just someone browsing the Internet well mess it up. One more thing, by brother brought his PS3 over not too long ago and I hooked it up the exact same way my 360 is hooked up and we played COD4. Guess what we had 1 to 2 bars, laggy!! Just to see if it was my connection I hooked my 360 back up and I had 3 to 4 bars. I think the dedicated servers play a lot in this. If you have a friend that has a 360 ask them to bring it over and run some test. Play some PS3 games online and check the bars or pings and then hook the 360 up and play the same games to see if there is any change. Well I hope this helps you out a little.

Thanks for the suggestions. I do have RevA, nobody lives near my house so my router is unsecured, no P2P running, only other things on the network are 2 Tivos. They might download small amounts but I don't think they download much.

I think my problems are mostly because I'm 6 miles from the Sprint tower, just an inconsistent signal.

You know if someone has a cantenna they can home in on your signal and do it that way. If I were you I would make it secure just to be on the safe side anyway. Also, making a cantenna might help you too and it is really cheap. I used a coffe can to make mine. My signal was - 65Db before I used it and now it is -55Db. If you have some money then may be buy an antenna for your device.

My Sprint EVDO was running really smoothly this weekend so I gave GTA IV another try. Sat down with my laptop beside me, pinging Google.com constantly. I wanted to see if the connection slowed or dropped when GTA IV kicked me off multiplayer. I was getting about 160ms average ping.

Fired up GTA IV multiplayer, joined a game, and it worked! I played for a couple hours in several different games, no problems at all. I don't know why the first 4 or 5 times before I tried multiplayer it never worked.

Also did a good bit of PC gaming, Worms Mayhem, Day of Defeat, Red Orchestra, and Battlefield 2142. I kept a DOS window running pinging google.com and I had great luck, seems to work better that way like Sprint gives you higher priority when you have a constant low-level stream of traffic, maybe it thinks you're streaming radio or something.

I am glad that there is no lag when using the U720. I am a noob with the EVDO and trying to figure out how to get going. Thanks for giving me hope.
