Anyone else in the Charlotte, NC general tower area (I believe it is SID #114) been suffering from vast spikes or dips on connections, or frequent disconnects over the last few days? I have a friend running a UM150 with a Cradlepoint Router & external antenna. His net works fine for days, then all of a sudden yesterday it starts to fluctuate badly.... going from 1100+ download and 118 uploads on the high end down to 100 downloads and 49 uploads on the low end. Could they be testing Rev A in the Charlotte area, or could this be related to them tweaking the towers in preparation for it given the announcement?

Also the IP range seems to fluctuate heavily, usually his IP is 98.xx but yesterday some 166.xx mixed in... which I believe is part of the problem.

Usually he gets at least a steady two bar signal EVDO signal out of four, and did without the external antenna. That has improved the reception however, and usually as I say it has been stable until yesterday.

I'm up between Mooresville and Salisbury on hwy 150 - about 35 miles from Charlotte 'as the crow flies'. I've seen the same things lately; constant disconnects, lower speeds, etc. I *THINK* they are experimenting with towers in the area. I say that because one minute I have a good signal, decent transfer rates, etc. Then all the sudden, it disconnects, and can't find a tower to connect to at all. And it can't be just one tower; there are 3 within range of me, so if one goes down, I simply hit another one (signal may change but at least I can connect). After a few minutes, it will finally find a signal again and reconnect. For some reason, they are shutting them down, and going on/off/on/off. They are doing something but I don't know what. And yes, during all this, my transfer rates vary greatly. At some times, I may be getting <300kbs download rates, at others, it'll jump to >800kbs. Doesn't seem to be any particular time of day, just random.

As far as IP ranges, mine have done that for a long time now - over a year. When I first setup (I'm on a teathered razor), I always had 166.xx.... addresses. About a year ago I started getting 98.105.xxxxx addresses. I didn't complain because the 98... addresses seemed to be from a different tower and better signal. I still get mainly 98.. addresses, occasional 166... addresses, and once in a while, I'll get a 96.xxx...address.

It could be related to Rev. A. When Verizon and Sprint were bringing up Rev. A there were a lot of reports of erratic behavior.

As for the 166.xx IP -- these are some of the original Alltel (Service Provider Corporation) IP addresses. During their expansion last year they added IPs in the 98.xx and 96.xx. Is it worse on 166.xx?

I'd try posting this question over on alltel.howardforums.com -- hopefully with "Charlotte" in the title you'll get Towertester's attention (he's in NC).

Like the person above the connections seem to be stronger in the 98.x IP range, the 166.x seems to be much weaker.
