Hi there, we just got Alltel's wireless internet on tuesday and recieved a CTR 350 router and the Omni external antenna. We have everything set up, and are getting 2-3bars as of right now. How do I know if I am connecting to the EVDO or 1X networks? I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 - went to a friends to activate the modem (UM150) originally.
My speeds atm are around 50-100k down, mostly, though it occasionally drops to dial-up-like speeds (>4k), and the only way to get it back up seems to be unplugging and then replugging it in. Which is a PITA.
Also, we have an old tv tower that we could put the antenna on (vs our roof), and are wondering if the coaxial cable really matters? We think we'd need around 150-200' of cable... I've found the ultra-low loss stuff at another site for $97 for 100'... but thats still a LOT of money, yk? Also, would a Yagi antenna be better than the omni?
Tons of thanks in advance! |

That kind of distance would likely kill off any gain you obtained. You could use even more higher quality cable, but you're looking a $300 project.
Yagi is good if you can SEE the tower.. physically.. and point it at it.
Omni is good if you can't see the tower or have many towers in a close radius around you.
I'd just pole mount it on your roof somewhere and you'll be good to go. |
