|
|
I have read numerous posts on google indicating one can use a Wi-Fi grid antenna designed for 2400 MHz reception to amplify cellular signal. The example requires the grid antenna to be hooked up to the air card.
This has got me wondering if the same concept can be used to amplify the signal outdoors. For example, on my farm which is a little over 400 acres, I can't receive a verizon cell phone signal but when I am up at my house I receive a good signal.
Is their anything I can do to amplify the signal over my farm? |

Well, an antenna doesn't technically "amplify" a signal. Like a flashlight with a reflector, it puts the energy (radio/light) where you want it instead of where you don't.
The 2400 MHz grid antenna I measured happened to have a feed that was also usable at PCS (~1900 MHz) but NOT at 850 MHz (where a lot of Verizon EVDO appears to be).
That said, antennas of this type generally work best out doors and when mounted as far away from and generally above surrounding clutter.
If what you want is something to cover your entire 400 acres and "fed" from your good signal location near the house, you are generally talking about an active, on-channel repeater. This would require two antennas, one good one (designed for the carrier's frequency) at the house pointed at the tower and another one ISOLATED from the first, selected to give good coverage of the 400 acres but NOT of the antenna located at the house. In between these two you would need a bi-directional amplifier (a.k.a "amplifier" on this forum) with enough gain.
While this can be done, and can work VERY well, it probably isn't something that one unaccustomed to such endeavors would be wise to take on without some help.
OTOH, if you only want to cover a single location some distances away from the house, you might do the whole thing with cables. Same arrangement as above but the second antenna replaced by a long cable running to wherever on the 400 acres you wanted service.

I kind of understand what your saying but I dont think running a physical line is going to work for me. I would have a lot of ground (ft of wire) that would have to be installed and that would probaly lead to crop damage and or water run off problems (within the trench used to bury the line).
I was just hoping for a wireless solution to my problem.
Thanks for your help. |
