I recently bought a Blackberry Curve for the T-Mobile Network. One of benefits of the Curve on this network is that it does WiFi calling on a WiFi network using a wireless router. I also have a KR1 with a Verizon card. When I am home I am able to connect to my cable company wireless router and make all the calls I want over WiFi. I can go to a hotel and connect to their WiFi and make a call. I can be at an eating establishment and if they have WiFi, I can make a call WiFi. What this means for me is 0 minutes used on a plan. My office has WiFi so this saves me alot of minutes. But this is not working on KR1! When I connect it to the Kyocera through WiFi, the Blackberry Curve finds the WiFi and connects to the KR1. The problem is that I am not able to make a call off the KR1 WiFi. Any suggestions? I can be riding in the car and surf the internet over the WiFi part of the KR1, but even though the Curve is connected, it will not make a call. Are there some tweeks that need to be made? I want to exhaust all possibilities before I give up on using the Kr1 to make WiFi calls.

KR1 has a firewall that blocks unsolicited incoming connections, including a lot of VoIP products. You'll need to configure the KR1 firewall to allow the service you're attempting to use; I imagine there is an FAQ for that Blackberry somewhere.

I found this info while searching the internet:

The HotSpot @Home service relies on the IPsec security protocol to provide secure calling over Wi-Fi. T-Mobile-branded wireless routers are configured to permit IPsec communications by default, but other devices may be configured to block IPSec. Similarly, the firewall policy on any router may have been configured (intentionally or otherwise) to prevent IPsec communications.

In order for IPsec to work, the following ports need to be allowed through the firewall in both directions:

* UDP port 500 (Internet Key Exchange or “IKE”)
* UDP port 4500 (IPSec/IKE NAT-T)

Many consumer-grade routers, including the T-Mobile branded Wi-Fi routers, include a simple check-box that will enable IPsec communications. This option is typically named ‘Enable IPsec passthrough’ or something similar.

For users of advanced corporate firewalls or home-built firewalls (typically running a UNIX-like operating system), IPSec may also require explicit rules to allow the following two protocols (independent of port) through the firewall:

o IP protocol 50 (Encapsulating Security Payload or “ESP”)
o IP protocol 51 (Authentication Header or “AH”)

I have tried different settings in the firewall, virtual server and application tabs. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
