Looks like Sprint may be making some big announcements by the end of this month related to coverage and having many more areas online. They are working on shortening the cycle it takes to have the maps updated.
This is a great news. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

WOW! Very interesting indeed.
The short of it is:
- The government will buy the iDEN network from Sprint (Nextel) for emergency use only, moving all consumers off it by 2010.
- Sprint will deploy WiMax nationally, to replace CDMA data, with as much, if not more coverage than the existing CDMA network. Sprint intends to compete directly with Cable, Satellite, ISPs, and traditional Wireless. By bundling all telecommunication services ever envisioned, Sprint will tackle everyone by offering everything.
- As a part of the transaction of iDEN to the federal government, Sprint will gain a blank check to rebuild the 700 and 800 MHz bands in their image, taking licenses as needed from whoever has them.
Ambitious? I leave it to you to determine how much of this is reasonable or believable.

Last I heard, Sprint is evaluating Flarion (now that Qualcom acquired it) and has not yet commited to WiMAX. While they still may go with WiMax, it does not make sense they would invest so much in EVDO if intending to replace completely with WiMax. If anything WiMax will compliment EVDO.
I was at a wireless conference earlier this month that focused a bit on WiMax. I'm still skeptical it will deliver widely to consumers unless many players commit to it (carriers, handset makers, Microsoft, Cisco, etc). WiMax, especially mobile WiMax, is too little too late. Fixed WiMax may have a place as a backhaul but it needs mass usage to be cost effective.
Too many stars, suns and moons have to align for WiMax to become a major consumer player me thinks. |

That article was a "little" over-the-top. I can imagine Sprint obtaining the right to use eminent domain to gain enough 700 MHz spectrum to do a national WiMax network. But remaking the 700 MHz spectrum in Sprint's image? No. IMO they will be allowed to do a national network on a portion of the 700 MHz spectrum, e.g. 750-760 MHz. If someone else already owns 750 MHz in, say, Boston, they can be forced to move to a different frequency.
But hey. Whatever it takes to get rid of ALL the wires is OK by me. Just so there's more than one carrier to choose from. |

As opposed to Kim, he does not exaggerate claims or stretches the truth. As constructive criticism his ego does sometimes get too big for his own good but we all things we could improve. |

| The only big announcement I can think of is the hardly noticed release of Power Vision phones and the subsequent release of the Power Vision service. Nothing big as far as I can see since most people who frequent websites like these already knew Sprint had EV-DO but it wasn't official. |

I talked with a Sprint rep in Seattle yesterday. Unlike most of the reps I've talked to, this one actually seemed to really know what he was talking about wih EVDO. He said the "big rollout" would officially be announced on 9 Nov when all the areas that Sprint has listed as "future" EVDO territory would be lit up. Until then, apparently most of those areas are unofficially lit up for testing purposes but may be up and down as needed by Sprint.
I guess we'll see if he was right or not.

This original thread was started because I heard 10/31 was "the day". Then I heard November 1st was the day. I have heard Nov 8th and Nov 9th.
I guess, we will know soon.
I have heard there will be 2 rollouts. One very soon, and another by the end of the year (which will lite up future coverage).
We will have to wait and see. By the reports on the Sprint forum up here, there are more coverage reports, and when they finally 'throw the switch', I expect we will hear from many more people. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |
