I'm looking for recommendations for the most stable evdo card Alltel offers. I'm not looking for blazing speeds but any card that can hold a connection for 12+ hours would be great. Right now I have a KPC680 and it's a piece of sh*t.
If anybody has a success story with the CDU 550, UM150, or EC228 as far as constant, stable connections, let me know. Thanks. |

What kind of a signal do you get?
I have a laptop dedicated to serve internet to 4 pc's using internet connection sharing, it's set to redial when needed.... and it redials like every 5 secs sometimes... a few hours at most.
I have about 40-70% signal here... in town where it's 100% it never disconnected for over 10 hours before I had to take it back home.
I have an EC360... I would look into an external antenna instead of another card, but I'm no expert. |

None of them can hold a connection for more then 12 hours. It's part of alltels service. After 12 hours of active time it will disconnect you and you'll have to reconnect manually or set it up to do it for you.
I use the UM150 with an antenna and maintain maximum signal, but the data server still sucks so not much you can do about that. Lets pray for RevA now that Verizon owns them. |

My signal is perfect, 100%, the tower is only a few football fields away. It's not a disconnect issue because of signal rather a hardware problem with the card itself.
I'm not alone. I started a post awhile ago about the card with other people experiencing the same problem. It's a permanent shutoff of the card until taken out and reinserted, randomly. In fact, my original post was a lot longer but it went out then and forced me to reboot. Anyway, thanks for the reply and if anybody has a solid connection, let me know. Thanks |

I don't have any of those problems with UM150. |

| Krileon, how long are you able to hold a connection? does it ever go dormant? if so, does it come out of dormancy without a problem? Thanks |

Not too long ago I ran across this on another forum: KPC 680 pulled from agent inventories....
To summarize here
| Quote: | | We were told to return all unsold KPC 680 air cards to the distribution center. Existing cards with "issues" are to see retail location for software update [KPC680, KPC680A, and KPC680B]. What is the reason for this? (No reason or issue was given.) |
| Quote: | | Within the next few days, stores will be receiving data cards with updated software. These cards will be part number 680c so they can be differentiated from your current inventory. |
Can't help much as to the other cards -- I have an older PC5750. Both of the newer USB modems seem to work fairly well (UM150 and the new EC228) but the latter is still lacking more widespread router support.
All of the cards go dormant when they sense inactivity after a specific period of time (can't remember what it is exactly). They're set that way so someone else can use the service in the interim. Moving in and out of dormancy should be *barely* perceptible if the card is working properly (the card does maintain the connection, it's just in a wait state; gamers and folks on congested cell sites probably notice any delay more than I do). Mine goes in and out of dormancy hundreds of times a day but I don't notice it because my card handles it properly.
I've actually been wanting to switch to the KPC680 but have been waiting until the glitches get worked out. Its predecessor, the KPC650, was one of the best cards out there. |

Yep, but the problem with this dormancy crap is it'll do it even if I'm using the internet. It cancels out my downloads when it does to or stops a video mid stream. Makes youtube damn near impossible. Starting to really hate this service.
BTW it's a service thing and not a modem thing.
I'm thinking of setting up a program to constantly ping every second to keep it from going dormant, but even then I don't think that'll work. |

Fortunately I don't have these problems with dormancy -- the only time I get canceled is if I'm downloading, etc., when the 12-hour disconnect kicks in. |

| Thanks everybody for the responses. The KPC680, or at least the flavor I have, with this "issue" doesn't have a normal dormancy. I understand it's a good idea to keep network congestion to a minimum. This card shuts off or turns a solid blue, randomly, while still saying it's connected. The only way to fix it, is to take it out, and reinsert while sometimes it even freezes up my computer. The point is, I'm done with Kyocera and anymore suggestions/replies would be greatly appreciated. Thanks |

| I swapped my KPC680 for a UM150 for the same issues you were having. Took care of all my problems. |
