|
|
I was looking at At&t broadband cards because
1)verizon 5gb sucks
2)i have sprint now and it works sometimes but not all the time like it should as it was shown in the map online
I was wondering if they could use the antenna attachments and other things? anyone have any knowledge about this? and about their models that they sell? i see one by sierra and one by Option GT, whatever that is
thanks! |

i guess their website is misleading then,
they say they offer 3g but this is what it says on their website:
The AT&T 3G network uses HSDPA/UMTS technology (High Speed Downlink Packet Access/Universal Mobile Telephone System), which makes it possible to enjoy a variety of feature-rich wireless services. It also gives AT&T the advantage of offering simultaneous voice and data services. That means you can talk and use the Internet at the same time. How's that for multitasking?
i however think i would be in the EDGE only area, and this is what it says on their website:
EDGE is a third-generation, high-speed, mobile data and Internet access technology. It's fast enough to support a wide range of advanced data services including video and music clips, full picture & video messaging, high-speed color Internet access, and email on the move.
Prevalence
In areas where the 3G network is not available, customers will continue to receive service on the AT&T EDGE network, when coverage is available.
The AT&T EDGE network is available in more than 13,000 cities and towns and in areas along 40,000 miles of highways. It provides average data speeds between 75-135Kbps.
Now i was reading up a little on this EDGE thing and people say that the latency is really bad, does anyone have any experience with this?
I guess I am just really frustrated. I have the wilson amp, and the wilson externally mounted antenna. I have done everything i possibly can and I will be just randomly browsing the internet and all of the sudden my sprint card will just 'disconnect' and it will act like the card was unplugged from the computer and then plug back in.
It does the same thing in my cradlepoint router, in fact, it is even worse when it is in the cradlepoint router.
If anyone has any info on any of this i would appreciate it.
thanks |

AT&T's edge network is the equivalent of Verizon/Sprint 1xRtt networks. When I'm on 1xRtt (Edge) my google pings are around 300-350ms. It feels slow since the pings are so high.
If you are in a area with HSDPA get it. Its better than Verizon and Sprints networks as far as speeds. Problem is its no where close to the coverage of them.
AT&T also has a flat 5GB cap. Feel free to look at there data plans and you'll see it listed there. Should have hopped on the wagon sooner because your stuck with a 5GB cap now unless you want overages. Although in the case of AT&T I heard they just terminate you if you go over your limit.
1xRtt (Edge) is fast enough to stream XM off say AIM but it's not fast enough to buffer Youtube or Music videos.
Before I got my Antenna and Amp I was stuck on the slower side of the network and here are the download speeds I got with it. I should note if you want to do any type of gaming 1xRtt will not work. Ping times are to high. Less then satellite but worse than dial up.

I've used both. I hadAn at&t card for two years, now I'm on sprint. EDGE is better than 1xrtt, with less latency. That's my experience. EDGE pretty much behaves like my old ISDN modem, about double dial-up. The only drawback, I encountered quite a few towers where the damned thing refused to work, even when I had 5 bars. This isn't a problem if you're mobile like me, I would just drive 5 miles up the road, problem solved. But if you're using it from home, this could be a problem. It's not a widespread problem, but it happens, I usually encountered this every other week or so in my travels.
As far as caps, the 5 gig is a soft cap, meaning it's rarely, if ever enforced. At EDGE speed, you are going to be hard pressed to rack up that much data anyway.
On the 3g side, sprint's evdo has better coverage. AT&T's 3g areas are no where near as vast as Sprint's. Sprint's EVDO rev A seems faster and more responsive than my old AT&T card when it was pulling a 3g HSDPA connection.
here are some links, type in your address on both and see where you fall:

Also here is a link to the AT&T PC card users message boards, these guys know their stuff, they can help you out.
