PostPosted: Fri Jun 06, 2008 6:17 am    Post subject: US Cellular CradlePoint MBR1000 with Kyocera KPC680

I just bought this MBR 1000 Cradelpoint router from 3g store. I'm not sure how to configure the router. Sorry I am new at this. My aircard uses #777 to dial out on with UScellular . I see an AT modem setting in the router. So I tried ATDT#777 to dial. However it doesnt appear to connect. Connection says its offline in the router. Any help would be great on this. For I am a newbie when it comes to this stuff.
Question
Thanks

Does U.S. Cellular really have data services? That would be great to know! I use U.S. Cellular for cell phone service since they have the best coverage in Iowa. I didn't know that U.S. Cellular offered data plans though... Are you sure your aircard is through U.S. Cellular?

I don't know anything about the US Cellular card activation process but if you had to activate the card in a computer first then you may not need to configure the router at all.

For the other carriers most all of the necessary information is stored on the card itself and all you need to do is plug the card into the router then turn the router on. No special settings.

I knew USCC was testing mobile broadband somewhere (upper midwest?). I'm hoping it goes well and they expand -- especially now that Alltel has been sold to Verizon.

Yes it is from UScellular just call there business side on there web site have them check for availabity. The card is activated I use it on my laptop now. I notice there is #777 number it uses to connect with. I tried ATDT#777 in the router modem settings but nothing happens. Only thing I can think of is the #777 is what is tripping it up. Any ideas?

Thanks Smile

PostPosted: Fri Jun 06, 2008 9:57 am    Post subject: Offer to assist

According to our records your purchase of a MBR1000 router was recently made at 3Gstore.com.

Considering that the US Cellular network and data cards have not been tested with the MBR1000 router, we would like to offer some support that may result in a working solution for you.

Please contact us by telephone so that we can troubleshoot your problem. Seeing we do not have a US Cellular data card and service to test this with, we do however have state of the art technology to assist at a distance;-)

We look forward to servicing you soon!

Sorry -- I wasn't too clear on that. Try it without anything in the router modem settings (leave it blank). I don't have vast experience, but I've never had to enter anything, just plugged the cards into the routers and they worked.

Thanks for the direction on contacting them. I'll give them a call -- even if it's not available here it can't hurt to let them know someone in Lynchburg, VA is interested.

EDIT -- I see that Victor replied to you -- definitely give him a call (he's curious, tenacious, and should be a far better resource than me).

If you call US Cellular don't be surprised if they tell you they don't support the use of the card in a router.

Please let us know how things go. How long have you had the service? How reliable has it been for you?

I see nTelos is starting to offer mobile broadband in parts of VA and WV and I hope US Cellular gets moving on this so those of us in the hinterlands have another option.

PostPosted: Fri Jun 06, 2008 2:06 pm    Post subject: US Cell Tech

Well I talked just brief with one tech from UScellular for a minute while I was at lunch. He said they make a router for the cards? UHHH yeah!! So he was going to patch me over to the network gurus but I was out of time. I'm going to try to get with them this evening. If I get this up and running I'll post my results so that others can have a smooth install. I was using HUGHES NET so glad to ditch that bird. But I am only getting about a 16k - 10k on the downloads I can speedtest and get 156k down which is a bit odd but my signal strength is about 54% - 60% I tried the new antenna I bought from 3gstore. It locked at 100% to something but I saw the rtt1 signal display disapeer off the uscell utiltity. So I must be hitting some other signal I'm guessing. But I'll play around with it this weekend and see whats up.

LOL, it's hard being a trailblazer!

The difference between your download and speedtest rates is the difference in measurement units. Most downloads are measured in KB/s (kilobytes per second, sometimes also shown as kB/s) whereas most speedtest sites display kbps (kilobits per second). 16 KB/s = 128 kbps. Some speedtest sites show both (e.g., http://speakeasy.net/speedtest/ in the text beneath the main results).

Don't know how your utility abbreviates the different signal types but if you see DO or rA instead of 1x you'll be even happier you ditched the bird.

PostPosted: Fri Jun 06, 2008 5:04 pm    Post subject: Its on

I went home took the dial string out asked to reboot router. Router rebooted and it came alive. Also moved aircard up on the failover section to top proirity. Maybe that help. I have a desktop hooked to it cat5 now it would access internet but I can log in the router with it? Its the slowest of towers but it will do for now hopefully something faster brews up soon. I see roanoke has some fast towers close by.

Certainly USCC has started it beta roll-out of EVDO. We expect it here first of next year.

Can anyone who is currently a USCC EVDO user give me some idea of the monthly pricing and download limits / caps they're paying for USCC service?

Thanks a bunch!

US Cellular now has EVDO in my area in East Tennessee. Has anyone figured out if this or other routers work with US Cellular. They use the same CDMA technology as sprint and verizon and share their towers for roaming.
