This definitely sucks. I just dumped Sprint because of the 5GBcap and switched to Alltel. This is my only remaining option where I live. What really sucks is that Comcast stops about 1/2 mile from my house. I could live with a reasonable limit but 5GB is stupid for $60 per month.

If you have contract, VZW is bound to honor this existing Alltel contracts which has unlimited usage until "Alltel" contract expired or renewed with VZW contract. That is my understanding.

5GB cap is a joke for high usage customers like myself.. I use KR1 to hook to video phone to make calls to other deafs like myself.. Deaf use VRS (Video Relay Service) as well.

RichardReed would likely be correct... Verizon would have to honor your existing Alltel contract until it has completed, or they can void the contract and you can get out with no ETF. But they would have to let you know of any changes to your service, allowing you time to cancel before those changes take effect. So if you just joined Alltel, you're probably in the best position, at least for as long as your contract runs for.

However, looking at it from a Verizon customer perspective, I now get EVDO access to Alltel's network in addition to Verizon, including an area of rural Central Virginia that Alltel covers with EVDO, and Sprint roams on! Verizon doesn't have EVDO in this area. I'm excited that I'll now have 3G broadband data service in even more places than I already had it!

Just FYI, Verizon just received FCC approval to buy Rural Cellular, a year after the purchase was announced:

this should serve as an example for how long it will take before Verizon/Alltel merger could happen.

nobody knows for sure what happens to alltel customers who are not on contract... but understand that if you have no contract, verizontel has no obligation to you, either.

FCC to consider Verizon buyout of Alltel

Associated Press - October 16, 2008 9:34 AM ET

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - The Federal Communications Commission is scheduled to consider Verizon Wireless' buyout of Alltel Corp. at its meeting Nov. 4.

Verizon has agreed to purchase Alltel for $5.9 billion plus the assumption of $22.2 billion in debt left over from when Alltel was taken private. TPG Capital and GS Capital Partners bought Alltel for $24.7 billion and took on $23 billion in debt.

If the FCC approves the merger, Verizon would become the nation's largest wireless carrier. The merger would still require approval from the Justice Department.

New York-based Verizon has said that trouble in the credit markets won't keep the Alltel deal from going through. If approved, Little Rock would lose the status of being home to Alltel's headquarters, where it has 3,000 workers. Top executive positions are expected to be lost and many mid-level positions could also vanish.

Guarantee that ALLtel Customers will see the 5gb limit once the move is changed.

Verizon will word it as a comparable plan.
