What are the chances that the router will work with Xohm? I want to get something like the KR1, but I dont want to blow $100, and then in 4 months, it is no good to me anymore...
What should I do? |

| The chances that any current router (Kyocera, Cradlepoint, etc) work with WiMAX out of the box are next to none. WiMAX is a completely different technology than CDMA when it comes to data connections and it will require a lot of router firmware changes to make it work. I would say that even if you're able to get WiMAX in North America in four months, it will be a little while before anybody has a router that is compatible with it. |

| Also, unless your in Chicago or DC Wimax will not be out for a while. The new company doesn't even exist yet other then on paper. |

Most likely you will be using a desktop CPE modem device to connect to XOHM WiMax for home or office use. The CPE device could be connected to a normal off the shelf home type wired/wireless router to complete the network installation. An expensive EVDO router would not be used. For mobile operation a WiMax PC card or USB card would be used with a laptop.

yeah a stand-alone CPE modem with a standard wireless router would most likely be used, or perhaps they will be built into router/modem gateway combo units, much like some cable modem gateways are sold today. (I believe Motorola makes those too.) I'd go ahead and get the evdo router if you really need one though, they seem to be really great for the convienience of an on-the-fly wifi hookup to the evdo card. Besides, what's a few hundred bucks, it's only money, right? |

Well, the KR1 is an OLD router (ca. 2005) and it has had lots of updates and patches to keep it current. And it doesn't have a PC Card slot if you need that (I would) so I would at least consider the KR2 first. Unlike the KR1 (which is made by IOGear or D-link or somebody) the KR2 is made by Cradlepoint which makes really great EVDO routers and it is more current as far as what devices it will support. Almost sprung for one of these myself but dumped my EVDO card so I don't need it now. And oh yeah, it would cost a bit more...ah.....money....than the used KR1 you found on eBay.
But if you decide to take the risk and buy it and find it meets your needs, then hey....good for you. You might see what the guys here at 3G store have to say about the KR1 too first before you decide to pull the trigger as they are the authoritites on it, not me. Heck, I dunno a thing about nuthin. |

It's going to be a couple of years yet before generally available unless you are in one of the initial test cities so go ahead and buy your EVDO router, but the KR1 is an older model. Either KR2 or Cradlepoint might be better. |
