If given the option to pay for additonal bandwidth from Sprint, what would be a fair price to pay per gig over?

To the powers that be at Sprint, perhaps there could be a compromise! It would seem to be bad business to just start cutting people off for going over 5 gigs. I think there should be a reasonable overage charge per gig. If you think about it, we'll be paying $12.00 a gig so a smaller charge for each additional gig would be fair. That way, Sprint can keep most of the 1% of power users and still make money. Not to mention, keeping a slight edge over the competition.

I was actually thinking of creating a poll on this topic since every carrier pretty much is running 5GB caps.

This is similar to paying for minutes only were paying for data now. But 5GB just isn't enough for a power user. Yes there are users that are puzzled how some of us manage to pull more than 5GB per month. But the fact remains there are a lot of us that do.

Caps like this hinder what the internet is being designed to do. Just look at all the options you have at your fingertips.

Streaming TV or Podcasts
Downloading Music
Downloading HD movies or TV shows
Uploading photo's to websites/ web designers building sites
Playing games also includes downloading the latest patches
Software downloads and updates (My Vista 64bit SP1 was over 700MB in itself)
Downloading Demo's or Games Via Playstation 3, Xbox 360, or steam is going to kill 5GB extremely quick.
Downloading files from work
Live Video Conferencing and Voip services.
Youtube

Since the 5GB is cumulative between upload and download it really eats through your bandwidth if you do a combination of uploading and downloading.

I'm sure I've missed several other possible high bandwidth activities but the fact is if you do even 2 of the above mentioned your likely to use 5Gb per month.

This IMO is just the excuse they need to implement higher plans and force us to pay a even higher premium over dsl or cable alternatives.

I think members should mention if they have any other Hi speed options available to them. I'm guessing the majority will not. I know for one the moment a better option becomes available I will drop my Verizon and pay the ETF without a moments hesitation as I like to do all of the above.

So Verizon implemented there pathetic 40Mb plan option for $39.95 per month and 5Gb for $59.99 per month.

I would like to see another step to say $79.99 per month for 20GB per month.

Then they should offer a unlimited package for $99.99 per month.

That way the basic users that don't do much of the above can stay on there 5GB plan and power users can use the appropriate plan.

i agree. there should be at worst, a tiered purchase plan rather than just a 5 gig limit and that's that. Give us options rather than 'our way or the highway!'

Wth voice minutes my plan is like this for overage:

1 - 30 $5.00
31 - 60 10.00
61 - 90 15.00
91 - 120 20.00
121 - 150 25.00
151 - 180 30.00
181 - 210 35.00
211 - 240 40.00
241 - 270 45.00
271 - 300 50.00
> 300 20¢ / Min

Obviously the last choice in your poll, 0$, would be my preference. But I would pay $5 per gig over if I have to.

I would love to have select the $0.00 answer, however.....

If given the situation were we would have to pay extra when we go over the cap, then it's only fair that we can roll-over our "under-cap" usage in months when we don't go over or near the cap. With the cap, this becomes just like the included minutes in regular voice cell service which many (most?) such vendors are allowing to be rolled over.

I selected $0 because I tend to hit 20-30GB a month so $75-$125 extra a month would be more than I be interested in paying.

However, I would pay a higher flat rate of say $99 a month to get "true" unlmited versus "good enough" unlimited.

I would like a true unlimited price (but thats what we should have now). In any case, the next 5 gigs should not cost more than the first 5 gigs (or put another way, the next 5 gigs should not cost more than have a second account). Actually, there should be a discount for additional gigs, taking into account the costs of the card, additinal fees, the cost of the account, billing etc).

I just got a account an unlimited account at Alltel (as an addition to my Sprint "unlimited" account. This time, I made sure it was a business account (Rumor is that Sprint is not going to cap those). I get a few warm fuzzies from this seconds account. If Alltel caps, then perhaps they will grandfather the old accounts. I also now have a backup card and account. Payed off last night when I could not get one service to work, but the other did, and if I lose/damage a card, I do not have to wait for a replacement.

FWIW, Sprint roams on Alltel better than Alltel runs on Alltel (or perhaps the U727 is just much better than the UM150.

I smell a cap on alltel's service next.

all these people moving to alltel from sprint.

I don't know what the reasoning is for capping.. but I just hope it doesn't screw with my alltel unlimited. I have no other choices.

Well, in Verizon's case at least, the reason for capping is pretty obvious. Profits, pure and simple. Which can probably be said for Sprint and all the others as well. $490/gig overcharge on VZW is a rather hefty take for no additional expense or provisioning on their part. It's all about the money, man.

well, when all 3 cap the service.. they'll have nothing but the 1% of business customers that use it for that purpose. We'll see how much money it makes them then.

I have to agree with you on this. If Verizon started it then At&t followed the cap and now Sprint is deciding to do it its only a matter of time before they do it.

Granted there coverage is horrible compared to everyone else. I can't even get All Tell coverage in my state so its not a problem for me.

I really feel bad for people that jumped ship from Verizon to Sprint though since they still would have been grandfathered in unlike Sprint were everyone is effected.

I'd say at some point they will all offer better packages. For myself since I'm just throttled after 5GB on Verizon I'm testing it out this month and seeing if I get throttled. I've already downloaded roughly 3.5GB and I'm only on day 7 of this month. In a way it feels good to pretend I may not get throttled and download and watch whenever I feel like it.

I'm hoping since I'm on a very rural tower with probably hardly anyone on it they won't care. I don't know if the throttle is software based or based off complaints per customers on a given tower. I've seen reports of people downloading far over 5GB and not getting throttled with Verizon and they seem to be in spots like me with a very low active user list.

Personally I think Verizon has far superior coverage although it just may be my area. I can't see many sticking with Sprint when Verizon offers more Rev-A service. They killed there ace in the hole.

Another option has become available in my area, called Premium Choice Broadband. They say the technology is Motorola's Canopy System. They have different packages for different speeds and caps.

Basic $39.95 1Mbps download 10G soft cap

2nd Plan $59.95 3Mbps download 20G soft cap

3rd Plan $89.95 5Mbps download 30G soft cap

ping rates of 30-40ms

Operates at 2 Freq. depending on how close to tower and line of site, 900mhz and 5.7ghz

Anyone heard of this technology, pros, cons?
