I have been with Sprint Broadband (over the air to the diamond ant on the house). They lost their frequencies and are terminating at the end of July. I am at a place with no DSL or Cable available and Dishes are $$$.
Is there a EVDO modem that will work with my Netgear FWG114P router that I already have? This router is a 4 port wired/wirless router with a USB printserver. This is one of the few I've found with a printserver built in and I really don't want to spend more than I have to. According to the map, Verizon and Sprint both service my area.

Joe, to the best of my knowledge the answer is no. (It's the router that needs to be able to accept the EvDO modem.)
I think you basically have two options. One would be to use ICS on one of your computers in conjunction with your Netgear router. The other option would be to purchase an EvDO router. I am not a networking guru by any stretch but I think you can use the Netgear in conjunction with an EvDO router to retain the print server function.
Hopefully someone more network-savvy than I will pipe in here! |

I'm guessing I SHOULD be able to have my router be one of the ports, but then I forsee gateway problems by having two routers. other option is a wireless printserver ($$$)

you can disable DHCP (which is the gateway part) on routers, that way your router just acts as a switch and it will still enable you to keep the print server part.
as long as only one router is the DHCP server you can run multiple routers.
so you can go either ICS with only your current router or get an EVDO router and still use your current one. either way youll still have your print server. |
