One or two paragraphs briefly discuss what I had posted months ago. The early termination fee is simply seeking to recover the costs of the free phones. Unfortunately the telcos chose to say FREE phone rather than we'll finance the cost of the phone for you.

It seems the devious advertising tactics of these companies are becoming a problem for them. But then that is the definition of advertising, isn't it: a pocket for of lies.

I've always considered the "free" phone to be basically paid for in "monthly installments" over the course of the contract. Anything that requires a monthly commitment should be considered not free, but financed by the company. Far less surprises in the long run.

It could only be considered financing if the debt actually reduced over time. I think the FTC should be involved too.
