Greetings,
I spent 8 hours last night/this morning trying to get wireless networking setup in my house. I spent quite a long time on these forums, reading plenty of how-to posts and relating to other people's similar problems. I never got it working. Here's my "host" setup:
* Belkin N Wirless Router
* UM150 EVDO
* Desktop Computer - WinXP SP3
Now I have several devices I want to be able to get on the internet/lan with:
* Laptop - WinXP
* XBox 360
* PSP
The XBox can wait, as I don't have the wireless "extra" that costs $99. It's mostly the laptop I care about. Here are the steps I followed before, to try and get things rolling a bit:
With the router at factory defaults/rebooted, I plugged the ethernet cable from my computer into one of the 4 ports in the back, not the "to internet" potr, but the "to computers" port. It picked up my desktop quickly, and gave it an IP of 192.168.2.1, which I used to bring up the admin interface via Firefox. I turned DHCP off on the wireless router, turned security on (had to at one point because the neighbor was trying to connect and it was messing with my head).
On my internet connection (the UM150 EVDO device, with Verizon NationalAccess/BroadbandAccess) I turned on ICS. I couldn't specify "who" to share it with, as there was no drop-down box. Just the checkboxes. On the LAN connection that was plugged into the wireless router, I turned DHCP on (or rather checked- it was already on).
I'm pretty sure that was it. Now on my laptop... After setting all this up, it could see the wireless router, and connected. No internet though. I could ping the desktop, and the desktop could ping the laptop. The router showed an icon that indicates the laptop was there (though this cut out at times, even though it's across the room). My PSP could find the "WiFi" via the "Scan" option under the Network Settings, but it always failed when trying to get an IP.
I also tried something someone else suggested here on the forums- putting the ethernet cable into the "to internet" port on the router, but this worked less efficiently than the other method (or rather, didn't work at all). Any advice would be very welcome! I've been racking my brain on this, especially since someone else got me the router as a "gift". And that person is looking over my shoulder right now going "Tsk, Tsk, Tsk". I know this can be done, as I've read about others having success with this setup all over these forums. It's just that none of their solutions seem to be working for me. Just another run down of my setup:
* UM150 -> Desktop -> Router
And I want to be able to share internet, as well as files. Though if I can only get the net sharing working, I'll be happy. Thanks again. |

methinks you are letting pride get the best of you.
instead of continuing to lose time, money and even more pride,
just get a router designed to do the job you want to do.

Alex is right. A EVDO router IS the simplest way to go, but if you want to try it with your Belkin I've laid out pretty easy instructions here:

"methinks you are letting pride get the best of you."
It's not a pride thing at all- I would like to buy an EVDO router, but it's not possible for a little while. Otherwise I'd have solved this day one to be sure. Sorry I didn't mention this originally.
Jim, I had gone through that walkthrough from your blog a couple times, but every now and then a problem arose- if I reboot my computer, my IP address changes and I can no longer access the router config interface. Other than that, in theory there is no reason it shouldn't work... but it just doesn't. My two PCs are pretty much vanilla outside of a few installed programs, ie there aren't any "hacks" or deep tweaks applied. So I don't think it's any sort of conflict.
I've done networking jobs before laying cable, setting up small business sort of stuff when I worked at a computer repair shop. I'm no pro, but I know enough to be getting frustrated at seeing something that should work, but won't. I mean this is a simple internet sharing principle correct? Outside of the WiFi specifics of my router, it's still a router... I sat through support telling me things I already knew, but they paused when I told them my hardware situation. "No known configuration support for that setup sir, sorry" was the just of it.
I can setup a wired network between my destop, laptop, and Xbox 360 just fine- with Media Center running through the Xbox. I can even stream internet tv through the laptop to the xbox, no problem. But try and get this wireless internet sharing, and it won't budge.
Sorry for the long post... I'm gonna go through everything again for the hundredth time. |

IP configuration can be a real PITA at times. That's why, as Alex noted, it is so simple to just get a Cradlepoinit and plug it in.
Try this. Unplug any cable you have between the host, router and client. Reset the Belkin by holding down the reset button. Turn off everything. Restart the host and turn on ICS. Type ipconfig at a command prompt and make sure you have 192.168.0.1 as the IP...if you don't, ICS is not running.
If that's ok, run a cat5 cable from the computer to one of the LAN ports on the router, turn it on. Type 192.168.2.1 in a browser to get to the Belkin configuration. In the configuration screen there is a selection called "Use as Access Point"...enable it, don't change anything else. Save and exit. Turn everything off, restart.
Make sure all your other computers are set to get their IP automatically and that none of them are using 192.168.0.1. Now you should be able to connect to the router via a LAN port or wirelessly. _________________ evdo-tips.com |

Thanks for the helpful reply Jim. I've gone through so many different setups now that I've gotten overloaded, and chances are I even tried what you just suggested. But after going through what I know I've tried, I have a feeling this is the solution. Main thing here is the host IP settings, and unplugging things in a specific order.
Also, keep in mind I'll be connecting my laptop and PSP through the wireless router, but my 360 needs a wired connection for the time being. Is running another wired connection from the Belkin router going to cause any conflicts (known)? In theory it shouldn't, but who knows...
[edit]
Quick question- how am I supposed to get into the Belkin UI if I set my host IP to 192.168.0.1, and the UI address is 192.168.2.1? Neither address will bring up the UI if I set my host IP to a static one...

If you have made changes to the routers IP previously then 192.168.2.1 won't work. You will need to enter the current IP that's in the Belkin. Run ipconfig/all at a cmd prompt to see what IP's you have. The xbox won't be a problem. If you want, run IPCONFIG /ALL in a Command Prompt window, then place the mouse pointer in the Command Prompt window, right click and "Select All", then press Enter. This will copy its contents to the clipboard. Paste that into a forum reply message here. _________________ evdo-tips.com |

Okay guys, thanks a bunch for the help. I *think* I got it set up correctly now. Haven't tried the wired connection to the 360, but the PSP and laptop are now getting access. Turns out I wasn't holding the reset button down long enough for starters, beyond that it was a few steps left out of all the guides I came across- such as getting access to the admin UI after going the ICS route, you need to set gateway IPs and such.
Anyhow, thanks again! I'd do a write up on what I did, but that would be overkill. The thing that fixed my problem was putting in the Belkin router's IP, as the gateway IP on my host machine. |
