Skype is usable over wireless. I've seen it. Has anybody tried it w/ VZ's EV-DO?

Do I need to use a card or can I buy a phone w/ a USB port?

If I need to buy a card what's the best one out there? Kyocera.

I guess a need to buy a booster antenna, because frankly I'd love to trash my 3 meg cable modem service, which is a rip off.

Has anybody tried to use the bluetooth function as a modem? because VZ wants me to buy a phone in order to get the $60 deal aircard deal?

Sorry for all the quesions.

If anyone has any feedback on any of these, I much appreciate it.

Thanks.

I've been using Skype over EVDO (v620 card) to other Skype users for a couple weeks now for my work calls, as my home VOIP went down during that time with a long DSL outage. I use skype for the one-to-one calls and my cellphone for the conference calls, to conserve cellphone minutes that would otherwise put me over my plan.

And yes, the high latency is somewhat noticable.

Thanks for the color Brendan.

Didn't know about the latency problem.

Does it sound like crap or what?

Thx.

It's workable, but you have to treat it a little bit like an international call with some delay and a little bit like a cell phone call with occassional garbling. But hey, it's another phone line and it's "free" to talk to the other skype users.

It's a trade off. I use a regular phone line for conference calls, and skype for the one on one work calls. e.g. A coworker was in a datacenter in brazil with no telephone (analog or cell), so skype is how I provided remote support to him in that situation.

Thanks Brendan.

I'll check it out.

I've never heard Skype. I guess it's pretty close to 5 nines if you're using a cable modem w/ 3 megs.

The card, which is what, 300K-700Kbps, means you're going to have to accept less than 5 nines.

Q:

Do you recommed the V620, or have you been hearing about better cards, like the Kyocera, perhaps?

Thanks.

Pat

I video chatted with my mom over Apple's iChat application. The audio was fine and the video was even decent. This was driving down the road and in the Taco Bell drive through. If Skype can't hang with just Audio, then it sucks.

The v620 and the kyocera (650?) are essentially equal in performance. My understanding is that most users have seen these two cards give better performance than the older one (5220?).

ichat is free and it can be used with a free AIM account or a .mac account.

ichat can be used with the latest version of AIM for audio or video, and text of course.
