I disagree--if you could run your dial-up connection at 5.5 KB/s 24/7 for a month (assuming a month is 30 days), you'd hit 14.2 GB in that time period...the chances of this happening are unlikely;most dial-up ISPs have limits on how long you can stay connected, and most of the time the integrity of the connection doesn't stay the same all the time. That said, even under these conditions, I could still see someone easily breaking 5GB in a month, even with dial-up.

the only advantage with EVDO is that you'll get (most likely) lower latency and you'll be able to download things quicker (of course, that means you'll be able to hit the 5GB cap a lot faster too).

I think the cap sucks too. That being said, what now? I'm a mobile user and I have no other option than Sprint, Verizon or AT&T. (verizon is taking alltel off the table.) Sprint was the one that dared to be different, then the decided to be like everyone else. It's either accept the cap or go back to the pain of pointing wardriving antennas out my truck window, and maybe finding a connection once a week. I hate to sound defeated, but I am. I'll just have to learn to live with the cap. No more streaming hour long television shows, no more all night first person shooter online gaming sessions. I guess I'll have to live without those activities, I have no other options. I'll just have to find ways to save my large downloads for when I have a wi-fi connection.
The people I feel for are the rural users that were using this at home, because they have no other way to get broadband. EV-DO was sold to them as a solution, and really, if Sprint has a customer out in middle of nowhere, with a tower pretty much to himself, and he's moving 10 or more gigs a month, who is he hurting? I've never seen a squirrel with a Treo. Hopefully Sprint will leave these folks alone.

Has anyone tried

I think many people are on the Telus connect 100 plan, but live in the USA. (and bill it to a friend/relative in canada)

(since Telus is the only carrier that has unlimited in north america)

This is sort of like having a DirectTV sub in USA address but watching it in Canada.

Well, I just canceled. It was surprisingly painless too - I though the customer service rep would've done anything to keep me from canceling or insisted that I had to pay the ETF (which I don't have to pay due to them changing their Terms and Conditions).

I have DSL in my area thankfully. However, I feel for those who don't have anything else; I was on dial-up for a decade before Sprint EVDO came along!

I disagree. My dial-up ISP had absolutely no restrictions on usage. I could have left my modem connected almost 24/7 and it was fairly reliable; it was darn slow but I would have stuck with that had a known Sprint was going to restrict usage to a pitiful 5GBs a month.

I'm staying. That said, this is a luxury for me. I use it at work so I can surf where I want without the boss looking over my shoulder. But I could just as easily surf using the work connection. There are only a few times a year where I really need true mobility (e.g. vacation, business trips, etc.).

For now I'm also staying. I got it for exactly the same reasons, to keep my private net connections off of the work network and so I wouldn't be subjected to the work-imposed surfing limits (just a few websites that they blocked, but those were important to me).

For now, I'm a freelancer, and not having the cap would have been better, but I'll survive with it and using more free WiFi hotspots.

My 2 year contract doesn't end until November, so I could try and get them to put me on month-to-month a tad early or just wait it out and see how it goes.

Think about this in terms of 'fairness'. 5GB is tad more a DVD's (single layer) worth of information . It's 7 CD's of information. It's 2-3 games from Valve's Steam. With 1.5Mb connection, only figuring download, it's approximately 7.5 hours of communication time per month.

I use my Sprint wireless as my primary internet, as I'm a rural user, and have no other options. I'm a heavy Internet user, but mostly as a 'user'... I don't have a lot of P2P traffic or seeding torrents for days/weeks/months on end. I do watch some video online, and have a teenage daughter who likes her YouTube video. I watch game trailers and maybe some Robot Chicken from Adult Swim once a month. The last Apple update (which happened this last month) for our two computers at home were 500MB each. My connection stays up, and I have no idea how much traffic is just 'garbage' of worm probes and IP overhead. My entire family uses the internet constantly for research on various topics.

Right now, I'm at 16GB for the month of June (Sprint says 20GB, but they start from the 27th of the last month). I consider myself a normal user for anyone who uses EVDO as a primary line (btw, I strongly feel that Sprint's only-1%-use-more-than-5GB stat is counting all phones that are EVDO capable... I don't see most smart phones using anywhere near 5GB for the average user, especially if they're counting business users. Lies, damn lies, and statistics, et al.)

If $60 is priced too low for my class of user, so be it. Charge me for the privilege. I'd happily pay $1 per GB overage or something reasonable. But just saying that I don't fit their profile as a customer, and therefor am somehow tainted and undesirable is just stupid. Price the service so that you can (reasonably) make money, don't just toss customers.

So, 5GB does not work for me, and I will be forced to find some kind of new service if it comes down to it. In the short term, though, I can see myself going from month-to-month to avoid the ETF if they do decide I'm a technological leper.

After trying to cancel by email for a week (all I got was replies that someone would call me but of course they never did) I called today and just canceled by phone. They saw my usage for this month is 10GB. I was first offered a $40/month tariff which I rejected, then they amusingly suggested I get a Sprint phone with the everything ($99) plan and tether the laptop which I also rejected!

So as of the end of this month my account is terminated without ETF (and now I have a U720 to sell).

bradsjm, did you ask CS to send you a confirmation email? If that CS rep do not cancel (intentionally or by mistake) and you and blow through 5 GB, Sprint can terminate you and charge an ETF. All you can say is "some CS agent said..." with no proof.

I'm in no way questioning they told you the above (its obvious they will say anything) but I thought the everything $99 plan didn't include unlimied tethering.Actually, I didn't think ot included tethering at all.

I'm a rural user with 2 users and wireless is my only option. I checked the Sprint website and I've averaged 8 GB per month since April, and this is without many downloads except a few songs per month and heavy X-Box live use. I canceled the Sprint service because I can't take a chance of getting hit with excessive usage fees or a ETF at Sprint's whim. I'll be switching to Alltel's unlimited plan, and cross my fingers that it will stay that way until DSL is finally available in my area. If Sprint went with something reasonable, like a 20 GB cap, they would lose a fraction of the users who are now jumping ship.

Really? Mine hasn't changed a bit.I do have the "luxury" (yeah right) of working nights, and I live in a very rural area,so I probably have the tower pretty much to myself this time of night anyway.
