It's not perfect, but it seems to work in a roundabout way...

Instead of using the QLM that came with my KPC680 (Ver 4.6.5), I downloaded the version from alltel for the UM150 usb data card (Ver 4.7.4). When you use the Cntrl - D and "diagsmsi" command, it opens up the same 3 menu bar, click on settings on this version though lets you not only change the IP options, but also gives you "automatic", "CDMA", and "HDR only" radio buttons to select from. After making your selection and closing out, you will most likely get an error message. Either "This card does not support this option" or "input error" or something similiar. Just close the QLM program and then open up your actual version that you normally use (V 4.6.5). It should be locked to whatever mode you set it in. You can actually double check your mode by repeating the above process, but just cancel out instead of select mode and "ok".

As a disclaimer, I do not profess to have the slightest knowledge why this works, but it is easy for me to test due to the area I am in... I have to use a booster to get EVDO at all, and without booster on I get Rtt only. For the record I am using Vista OS too if that makes a difference.

I came upon this by accident when I installed my friends UM150 (for some reason mine KPC680 would not ever go to Rtt mode ever and so would not connect at my current location). I work on an oil drilling rig that changes location every 30 days or so, so my connections vary from place to place.

If you have any questions on how I did this please ask, but I am by no means a data card expert. I have networking skills, but this is my first go around with cellular data cards and my knowledge of cellular is not that high, but I am trying to learn all I can. I have found a lot of posts here helpful, especially from Bigdave and Karlyn, so if you have anything you could add to shed some light on why this works, please chime in. I have seen many people asking how to do this so I thought I would share my experience that I accidentally came upon.

Edit: I also am able to actually use the UM150 QLM software to log onto the web.

Very cool, Kain. I always wondered if using a different version of the QLM software would work like this since the Verizon-branded KPC-680 allows for forcing to HDR.
