|
|
I have the Compass 597. When I open the sprint smartview, it removes all my local lan interefaces! If I have an existing lan connection(not even internet), it wont connect as it says there is an existing connection until I unplug it and it then removes the lan interface again. Most frustrating is they dont come back when I exit smartview until I reboot!
I can only think they're trying to block ICS, so Im not sure how you guys are getting ICS working. I don't even WANT ICS I want to access my Network attached storage while using my internet.
What version smartview are you using? Im using 1.12.0015.0 or 1.13.0000.00. I called sprint and they said its not designed to work with any other connection and then when I argued that it was irresponsible to disable my lan ports they hung up on me....
If I don't even use their connection manager but just use windows to activate the cdma connection, it still removes my lan interfaces so I cant even just avoid the connection manager.
Anyone have any advice? How come I can't find anyone else having these problems? |

Resolution.
I think I found a workaround here:
I enabled ICS on the "CDMA" dialup account, and then plugged my Wireless router (Apple Airport Express) into the wall, with default settings. I then plugged an ethernet cable from my laptop into the router.
Once plugged in, I disconnected and closed my Sprint Smartview program. I then connected via the actual dialup connection in XP under Network Connections. Bypassing the Sprint software.
I was then able to have the LAN plugged in AND be connected to the Wprint modem at the same time.
Give it a shot. I am using the Compass 597 as well.
I am going to try this on my WiFi from the laptop so that I am NOT tethered to the ehternet cable here. Will let you know how that goes!
*EDIT*
I tried this same setup without connecting to my WiFi router over wireless. It did not work. Seems to only work with my laptop connected to my router via ethernet. Anyone figure this one out? |

Does this apply to my wireless testing above? As far as not having to be tethered to my router with my laptop, but instead having it done over wireless? |

| you can go into the smartview and change the setting of disable other network adapters. This will free up the Lan. That is what I did and it worked fine. |

Ok, I guess I was trying to figure out if I can configure this to use my Wireless Adapter to distribute the modem signal here, instead of having to keep my laptop plugged into my router of the LAN. |

do you have a cradlepoint or similar router? The cradlepoint 350 works well for wireless and you can set the wan up to lan for output. This can go to another switch if you need.
If you have a normal router you might try and set up the lan on the laptop to go to the router to share, but not sure if it would work, you would have to set up the laptop to share the internet. |

I was actually able to get the EVDO + ICS + Wireless to function as an Ad-Hoc connection so people can connect wirelessly through my laptop. Good for situations when I am able to use my laptop as a router. |

| Where are you guys seeing these Network Rules options? I do not see any tabs or options that would seem to allow me to keep ports active. |

It may seem like Sprint is trying to prevent ICS from working, but they're not. Like any software with 'smart' in the title, SmartView is 'dumb' in many ways.
The first thing I did is turn off 'manage WiFi' in SmartView. It's much easier to get it working that way with Windows managing WiFi.
Next, get your Peer to Peer network working. That's the connection between the PCs. A key here is to set your PCs to ONLY recognize P2P networks. That way they won't automatically switch to whatever they 'sniff' out of the air making it seem like they don't want to work. In the Properties, Wireless Networks, Advanced pick 'computer to computer ad hoc networks only'.
Then, turn on Internet Connection Sharing. The key here was running the Network Configuration Wizard (NOT the Wireless Network Configuration Wizard).
Once you do these things it has a chance of working. My iPhone connected automatically with no configuration changes once the PC was configured properly.
Sprint was no help, neither was HP (the maker of the two laptops I was working with).
I now don't appear to need 'Smart' View at all. It's off and internet is working fine. I think once everything is set correctly the drivers are handling the internet and SprintView is mostly useful for getting GPS working. |
