Lots of discussion going on about who has better coverage, who is has coverage in more cities, etc.
Verizon has been deploying for the last 2 years and seriously started 1 year ago and has rapidly been deploying new cities and expanding existing ones.
Sprint announced EVDO this past summer and they started deploying in all airports first and then to major metro cities. That are claiming to be completed by the end of 2005 (time will tell)
FYI, MAPS are not always up to date. For example, in the Verizon one, the city of Cary and Crystal Lake are now in EVDO coverage areas, but the maps are not reflecting that. Also, there are areas in the Sprint map, where they now have coverage but the maps do not state that.
On the Verizon maps the EVDO area is the light orange. On the Sprint maps the EVDO area is the yellow area.
Verizon Chicago EVDO Coverage 10/4/2005
Sprint Chicago EVDO Coverage 10/4/2005
Also, understand that the Verizon vs. Sprint coverage is always changing. So, if you find this thread a few months into the future or sometime in 2006, the coverage for both WILL BE different.
As it is today, 10/4/2005, Verizon has a HUGE lead over Sprint in EVDO coverage. Sprint may be deploying to more areas as the roll out EVDO, but that doesn't indicate they have MORE coverage.
As I have stated in many thread on these forums, the only question to ask yourself is:
Who has the EVDO coverage where I NEED IT
As the months go by, I am confident that Sprint coverage will get a lot deeper than it is now. I am guessing that by this time next year, the question will become:
Who has the EVDO BANDWIDTH where I NEED IT
At this point in time, I am not sure what the answer will be, but I know it will be an interesting year getting to that question.
I understand that there are many Verizon Employees/supporters who frequent these forums and I also understand there are many Sprint Employees who frequent these forums and I expect both camps to put a "spin" on things in their favor.
We are authorized Verizon and Sprint Agents. Today, a lot of the postings and info is more in favor of Verizon, but that is because they have had coverage longer and there has been more to talk about. Our goal is to be honest and accurate and we will continue to call 'em like we see them.
I am expecting some real interesting "discussions" over the coming months

If it matters a hill of beans...
I have Cingular for my Voice plan...
However, I am using Sprint for my EVDO. I would have gone with Verizon however I get a 25% discount with Sprint. So, the choice was easy.

Reports in this thread for Sprint...
http://www.pdaphonehome.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=56554&highlight=coverage
Looks like much of Dallas, Minneapolis, Denver, LA, San Fran, Seattle, Austin, Kansas City, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Manhattan have been confirmed even though maps show just a portion.
Sprint is claiming presence in over 90 cities now. |

To put things in perspective...
I read the thread you posted and it really doesn't help your argument at all. Most of the posts are you stating there is coverage and the majority of others are saying there is coverage near an airport.
To HELP encourage people to report Sprint EVDO sightings, we started a monthly contest to give a free booster antenna. Each entry/posting gets you one entry in the monthly contest.

I really do expect lots of posts to be coming in soon, but I think it will be obvious by the postings here (and other places), when Sprint really starts turning on EVDO towers. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

Not sure what argument I'm supposedly bringing. I'm just reiterating other posts and what Sprint claims.
The ones not reporting metro-wide are Chicago, Louisville and Portland. I didn't list those cities. But the cities listed are having people report metro-wide or at least wherever they tested.
One reported only airport in Phoenix yet another reported Phoenix is nearly metro-wide.
BTW, Baltimore is also being reported with Sprint everywhere tested in that thread. |
