Hi,
For the last couple days, I've noticed that I have problems accessing certain web sites. For example, I can access evdoforums.com, but not evdoinfo.com. I can access google.com and perform a search, but then can't access the results of the search. The same happens via browser or using ping.
My system has not changed, so I don't think it's anything on my side. Offhand, this appeared to be a firewall issue, but I killed my firewall and I still have the problem.
I'm also getting a ":send: No buffer space available" for some traceroutes.
I use linux mostly, but I'm also seeing this problem on XP.
I have also witnessed a more frequent number of periods where network activity is halted. I'm not sure what's going on relative to this, but It's suspiciously like a timeout and a reconnect. Setting up a ping against google seems to mitigate this.
Anybody have similar problems?
This is in VT. |

1) Are you using a lot of ICMP (e.g. ping, traceroute, RIP, etc.)?
2) Are you using a lot of UDP (e.g. Linux NFS clients using UDP mounts and an rsize or wsize larger than the MTU would permit to fit in a single UDP packet)?
Other than that, you should "netstat -an" and add up the contents of the SendQ/RecvQ columns. It's possible that, in fact, you *are* running out of buffer space. For the default of 64K, you would need 2G of RAM dedicated to nothing but mbufs (not including headers!) to support only 32,768 simultaneous connections without mbuf overcommit. |

I think Verizon is having issues, perhaps some strange attempt to filter, or packet mangling or out of syncing.
I seem to now have more connectivity and can reach web sites that I could not before. Previously there were some that I could not access and some that would hang partially downloaded with "transfering data from..".
I'm not doing anything odd. No nfs, no ICMP.. A clean boot with kppp and firefox and I would have the problem. Eveything worked before. I was thinking there may be some weird usb/irq problem, but then again everything worked before and I made no changes to hardware, software, or config
Thanks for the help.. |

Dilbert.com paid a buncha bucks to have someone upgrade their site so it slowed everybody down. The first load or two of the new overloaded with code site froze, gradually getting faster but still way slow. The first page or second page sent my processors to 110%.
In other words, some of these heavily flashed and java'd sites are real dogs... Worth considering but probably not the final answer... |
