|
|
I have Hughesnet, and I pay for the ultra business plan. The speeds are OK and had little service interruption, but the latency sucks. The fact that they now cap me at 1.2 GB per 24 hours was too much so I switched to Sprint.
Here is my problem:
My house has about 12 computers, I set up a machine with Internet Connection Sharing with the Sprint USB EVDO modem attached to it. Everything works great, but the problem is overnight it disconnects itself. Is there any way to keep the thing always connected, or have it auto reconnect? Is there an idle timeout? Any way around this?
Thanks! |

you are likely to have better success operating your Sprint USB device attached to one of the Cradlepoint routers, like the CTR350 for instance
the CTR350 is much better at keeping a connection open, and it will provide for hardware-optimized connectivity, as well |

With 12 computers a EVDO router would be a much better choice. ....
However, you could leave a box running a never ending ping request on one of the machines, so sprint does not drop the line for inactivity...
just go to run and run the following:
ping -t google.com
That way there is always traffic flowing, and it should not disconnect. And ping packets are so small, it will not effect performance. |

or leave a webpage that refreshes automatically like a yahoo homepage.
you probably just need to set the "connection type" for the card to NDIS from RAS, that will enable windows to "auto reconnect". _________________ -brig XP / 595U |

I think you have to have NDIS to use ICS.. I could be wrong... but yes, make sure you use NDIS.
Also, the problem with a webpage re-freshing, is if there is a small window of maintenance or connection drop, the page will stop re-freshing... however the ping command will always continue.. and reconnect. |

Maybe you have some utility running that operates in the early AM?
For instance, on the Mac I might schedule cocktail to do its cleanup routines and reboot.
In such an instance I might see the computer as open and running but overlook the reboot. |

| Thats a good point, I had that problem with downloads if I left them go over night. I would find them only half done in the morning because windows was set to install updates every day at 3 am, thus stopping my download because the computer needed to restart. |
