Thanks to the members here I have purchased and installed a UM150
which has greatly improved my access speed from dial up.
I have also just purchased a HTC PPC 6800 to tether but have not received it yet.
My employer has just given us a few weeks to prepare to telecommute/
work from home so I am trying to get the best speed possible. If we can't connect at an acceptable speed (undetermined at this time) we will not be
approved to work from home. I am also helping a few of my co-workers get set up as most of us do not have access to DSL.
My recommended ping site at speedtest has always been Jacksonville now when I test the recommended site is Tallahassee...any reason for that?
I don't know if tethering with the PPC 6800 will be faster or not.
I read some of the posts here and thought I would look into a Wilson's Trucker Antenna but there appears to be quite a few or I should say quite price range. Is there a difference? They have the Trucker Antenna's then the Trucker Cellular Antennas, etc.
I live approximately 2.5 miles from the tower and would prefer an indoor antenna but if an outdoor would be better I could go with it.
Thanks for any insight you can provide.......... |

Buy an antenna from either 3g or maximumsignal. Doesn't matter. maxsignal has a 9gain antenna for like 60 bucks.. killer deal.
I bought one and went from a horrid signal to full strength EVDO.
You're on 1x ATM, but with a good antenna and maybe an amp you should be able to pull in EVDO just fine.
Maybe a grind antenna would do best if you know what direction the tower is from your house. A directional antenna might work too if you can see the tower.
Amp would deff kick the strength up as well, but they're expensive.
So I'd try an antenna first and see what happens. |

Thanks!
Is this the one from maxsignal:
9DB 30 inch Super Trucker Antenna - Omni Directional
SKU: SKU9DB30INTRUCKER
Will this work with both the UM150 and my cell phone?
If I go with the external antennas how are they installed?
Will I have to install lightening protection? ( I am in FL)
Sorry for all the questions! |

| make sure they have an antenna adapter for your card, and the trucker. I use the trucker, and I have an excellent signal with it. I'll post pictures how I have it mounted after the rain stops lol. |

Jumping right to an antenna purchase without doing signal testing,
can lead to a lot of frustration and wasted money.
Read this article, and do your "homework" first:

if you post your answers to questions at end of article,
we can provide recommendations based on experience. |

Here is what I have so far:
From the survey:
* what is the best signal you could find indoors, at location you want to use EVDO?
Today the recommended location on speedtest is Jacksonville not Tallahassee and the speed it better?
At the same time as speedtest:
RSSI 1XRTT: -90 dbm
RSSI 1xEVDO -93 dbm
* what is best signal immediately outside and around your house?
Not sure don't have a laptop to test right now
* how far do you have to drive to find -80 signal?
* whats between you and that distance? trees? elevation?
* assuming you need to mount an external antenna, how much cable will you need?
Not sure how far should the antenna be from the Satellite dish or does that matter?
* do you need to provide better signal to just one device? or multiple devices?
Depends on the cost. Only really need one right now.
Thanks |

Are you behind the caching proxy server?
If you don't know, go to some web page with images, right click on the image and check the properties. If it shows the source as 1.1.1.x/bmi..., then you are behind the proxy.
If you are behind the proxy, expect slow service. |

| Based on the information you provided I am behind the caching proxy server but I did stumble upon a site that can fix that for me for a $245 one-time fee...LOL |

Before I got stuck behind Alltels POS caching proxy server my download speeds were about double what your test is showing. Now, I'm getting about the same as you. What I got before was about what I expected from Rev 0.
Some people are reporting that their speed has somewhat returned even though they are still behind the proxy.
Maybe there is hope, maybe not... |

Yes. Yes, with the proper adapter. You just bolt them to your roof at the edge. No, they have a built in ground plate.
When you add the antenna to your cart you need to go to adapters and add the proper adapter for your modem.
What I did to mount it to my roof is drill a piece of 2x4 to the underpart of the roof edge and had to go out enough to get past the gutter. Then I drilled another piece at the end that points up. Then I bolted the antenna to that piece. This gave it a bit more height and allowed it to be past the gutter. Other things will work.. like metal, etc.. I used a good amount of screws (like to make sure it won't budge in wind, rain, etc. |

If you want to help to protect your equipment, your life, you want to meet building codes, and want the insurance company to pay if you get struck and your place burns to the ground, then you will want to look into getting both a good lighting arrestor and a good solid grounding system.
I live in Florida (in the second most lighting struck place on earth, with the first being somewhere around Ocala), I have witnessed all of the above happen multiple times, with complete repeats just past year alone.
Any expert will highly recommend that you get the lighting protection.
