What is your RSSI? your dbm...

An antenna will increase your signal and lessen your package lose

If your current signal is 85-95 range a booster antenna will probably fix everything up for you. If it is higher then this you might wanna try the external mounted antennas

should i get the $50 booster or a $50 external antenna? the booster supposedly gives 3dbi while the antenna gives 5 or 6dbi. and would i need anything else for the antenna? like will it get hit by lightning?

I own a Booster Antenna. I do not own the External Antenna.

Without the Booster my signal is -87dbm (+/-3dbm)
With the Booster my signal is -72dbm (+/-3dbm)

I was not expected to see this much of a gain with the small device, but thats true numbers. Somewhere I posted two speed tests with and without the Booster... I thought I knew what thread I put it in, guess not..

Anyways... W/o the booster my down speed was about 1000kb Rev0 connection. W/ the booster I see 1400kb or more (max i've tested is 1800kb or so). Rev0 I must stress this. My upload seemed pretty much unaffected around 100kb area. My pings dropped slightly, 5-20ms taken off. My connection also use to 'hang', doesn't with the booster.

The booster is 3dbi, and this external mounted one is 6dbi.. should work even better, key word 'should'. I do not own this antenna so I cannot do a side by side comparison.

That antenna needs a ground plate. The coax (10ft) and the connector to hook up to your modem are included.

Metal ground plane required (minimum 8" diameter)

I often read on the forums where someone complains about getting a poor signal when they hook up a magnetic base mobile antenna to their modem ...and try using it inside their house.
Simple reason for poor performance ... no ground plane.

It works great attached to a vehicle because the vehicle itself is the ground plane.

What is a ground plane? It is a flat surface of ferrous metal (galvanized, steel, etc) that a magnet mount antenna uses as an integrated part of its performance. Without this metal surface the signal reception will be sub-par. This has nothing to do about reflecting the signal to the antenna. It is about the design and construction.

As long as the piece of metal it sits on is big enough you will have an adequate ground plane. Use the following dimensions:

For Dual Band/800 MHz = 14" x 14" Minimum (28" x 28" recommended)

For 1900 MHz only = 6" x 6" minimum (12" x 12" recommended)
Any cheap piece of metal will work, roof flashing, pizza pan, cookie sheet, refrigerator or file cabinet Smile ...as long as its big enough. Just make sure you mount it in the center of a circular pattern.

Remember, this needs to be a ferrous (magnetic) piece of metal. Not aluminum.
