So, anybody have any troubleshooting suggestions?
My Novatel U720 holds a connection solidly (seeming) when hooked directly to my XP laptop.
When I plug it into the CTR350, I get about 1-5 minutes of good connection, maybe more, usually less, then the latency goes to hell and/or the connection speed goes down to just about nothing, then fully drops.
Sprint manager says the signal strength is -93dBm with 3 bars visible. On the CTR350, I get a signal status of "50" or so, but I don't know what to make of that number. It's hard to get the CTR positioned exactly to where the USB port on the laptop is, but they're less than two feet apart, usually.
I did order a booster antenna, which may even show up today yet. Crossing my fingers.
I have had the CTR for a good long while now. It usually works fine. Just updated the firmware from 1.6 to 2.1 the other day. My issues might be due to this location, my new office. It's an interior room, but there is a window to a large open space that opens outdoors. So I can see daylight, at least. And I get good coverage on my T-Mobile cell phone. |

Except T-Mobile is a GSM carrier, and Sprint is CDMA... which means that the U720 is not capable of using the same signal as your T-mobile phone.
Does your signal fluctuate a lot (ex: -93 to -103)? Or is it usually stable around the lower 90s? |

Interesting. What's your theory as to why that is?
My dB seems to be settled in the low-to-mid 90s as best as I can tell. I bought one of those antenna boosters (the little round/spaceship looking one) and it might be helping, but it's too soon to tell. The other day I came in to work and still had a live connection from the prior day. That was a first.
So today I'm at a hotel in downtown Chicago. Not using the antenna/booster thing. 76-78dB signal. But, the modem seems a little fussy, wiggle it and the Sprint manager drops the connection and says "insert device."
I wonder if my U720 is just wearing out. I've had it for a good long while and beat it up regularly, maybe a connection is coming loose. If it persists, I think I'll stop at a Sprint store or Radio Shack and pick up a replacement modem.
(Though this isn't necessarily the right thread/forum, does anybody have an opinion on which Sprint USB modem is best to buy nowadays? And works with the CTR350?) |
