|
|
| Just tonight when I connected to the internet using my alltel EVDO krazr, all of the images in my firefox and IE are fuzzy and compressed. All of the images are showing as coming from 1.1.1.5 . What is going on, All of my pictures on my computer are fine, but when I load up any page with pictures in my web browers they are all fuzzy and compressed. Does anyone know what is going on. By the way I am in Chatham, VA if that helps. |

Same here. Images are highly compressed and are being routed through 1.1.1.1-6
Im located at Mount Olive, North carolina. Errors started around 2:30 AM est for me after I was disconnected. Using a Huawei 360 (Which sucks for anyone who was going to ask).
Edit:
Searching a bit more, I think this is a leak from an alltel email:

Between Thursday, April 10, 2008 and Thursday, May 8, 2008, Alltel will be enhancing the data network giving Customers an improved data experience up to 2 to 5 times faster. This network enhancement is in the core of the network and will improve the way Customers see pages load. This enhancement is separate from the future Rev A Upgrade.
Our EVDO network is already "fast like DSL", but with this enhancement, we dramatically improve the efficiency of the network for Customers for free. Reps should be confident that applications like CellTop, Axcess Web, and BREW content will load much faster so it will be easier to demo to Customers for the "wow factor." The users experience with this change will be so dramatically improved that it should help our reps' confidence in our data network; not only when selling data cards, but feature phones and smart phones. Reps can continue to confidently state "Alltel has the best data network out there and we continue to improve speeds at no additional cost to our Customers."
Also, should any Customer bring in a Verizon, Sprint, or AT&T phone for side by side comparison, they can be confident that our download speeds are just as fast, if not faster.
Enhancement Details:
Handsets, smartphones, and Wireless Internet card Customers will notice a speed boost while using our 1X and EVDO networks.
The enhancement is FREE to our Customers and does not require new software.
Internet Explorer, Axcess Web, BREW, and CellTop will see a significant improvement in performance.
Most Alltel devices can receive the benefits of our network enhancement. However, the following will not be able to receive the enhancement:
BlackBerry
Office Sync
Mobile IP |
Other users from alltel are getting the same problem, and it started for them around the 23rd of last month.
So much for being a good ISP out in the middle of nowhere. |

Same here in Lynchburg this morning, must be our regions' turn. This is the first I've seen the compressed images. See "Forcing Downgraded Content?" or "1.1.1.x is back..." for other mentions. Hopefully things get back to normal, or are better, once they finish implementation.
Edit to add -- the speed test sites aren't working properly for me right now either. Both Speakeasy.net and Speedtest.net seem to abort during the download process. Testmy.net seems to work just fine. |

| We've had this since late April consistently, but I've never seen the compressed images. What I notice is a tendency to occasionally hang in the middle of rendering pages in Firefox, and youtube has been acting a little funny if it has to access google's video cache. |

I started having this problem last night. It seems to be exactly as described in this thread:
evdoforums.com/thread1053.html
Arghh. I hate being "helped" like this. I'd rather have the slower downloads.
Editing to add: I'm near Ruckersville, Virginia. |

FWIW, I just called Alltel. They say the data compression should not affect the visual quality of the pictures. They had me do a card reactivation, which fixed the problem.
In Axcess mobile, go to Tools, Activation, OK--that will reactivate (re-start) the card. |

Thanks for posting that, giblaut -- my air card is in the router now so I'll have to wait and try that later.
Oddly enough, Alex's image isn't compressed (!?) but I'm going to see if I can pull something else off 3Gstore's site since other images still are. Doesn't matter which platform or browser I'm using. [EDIT -- apparently the only pages I'm still seeing degraded images on are those I visited this morning and are still cached. Image quality is fine otherwise and browsing seems normal.]
@jfarris -- youtube videos still work for me although it's hard to tell if the image quality is worse than normal. |

| I haven't noticed any difference in quality when videos work on youtube, just that many don't want to work. I may try reactivating the card tonight, though. |

Did re-activation stop the caching proxy?
I'm getting the 1.1.1.x garbage now too... |

| Reactivation did not get rid of my 1.1.1.x proxy. I really hope they decide to not use the proxy. My wife is already upset with how slow a lot of her sites are because they have lots of little images on them. |

| No...still a proxy. I'm still not seeing grainy images, but I'm noticing that sites are loading faster, mainly because I'm not getting the pause in the middle while it's accessing one of the proxies. |

I guess I'm wondering whether or not this is a contract breaking change on Alltel's end. I've only got a few months left, but I'm not going to pay a termination fee.
I will take my business elsewhere if this proxy garbage continues. |

It's a breach of contract, which is really silly. They should have made it a volunteer thing or did some real in house testing before pushing it publicly.
You could consider it non-neutrality, which is illegal. (some websites flat out don't work)
You could consider it un-sanctioned throttling, which is a breach of contract. (people are experiencing slower speeds)
The list goes on...
I'm going to see when DSL will be at my house so I can break out of contract and tell Alltel to F off. I saw AT&T working at both ends of my street.. so I'm guessing I'll get DSL maybe by june, which will be so sexy... DSL /drool. (the DSL lines literally stop at the end of my street. It even has a repeater on it.. ready to expand down my road.) |
