I sent Alex some images to post up here as examples of what I was seeing when the proxy server first came on line in my area. Some images are from the evdoforums website and a couple of the images are from another website. For the latter I sent him copies of the actual images to post alongside the compressed images so you can see them for comparison. When this started the images were about a quarter of the original's size byte-wise.

Most of my issues have disappeared and even though I'm still seeing the proxy address for images the image size/quality is now the same via the proxy as it is for the original. I'm still running into a big load lag when pulling up more obscure sites (sometimes worse than my dial-up connection and so annoying!) but then the proxy seems to try and anticipate and cache ahead.

I have lingering problems on some sites where the image is part of the background (called within css) or is part of an include. No matter how many times I hit reload the images remain fuzzy. (I can't even view the background image and get it to reload properly.) Guess I'll have to flush the cache.

One of my biggest beefs was that for many of the images, the alternate text had been replaced with a message that said something like

Code:
The image "http://somewebsite.com/images/someimage.gif" cannot be displayed because it contains errors.

Not only is there really no image error, but the real alternate text had been replaced with this nonsense message. This seems to be fixed now but was irritating since I review websites for Section 508 compliance.

I also held my breath when I sent out a corporate newsletter. Outlook was showing the URL for the cached images instead of the images on our server. I tried to edit the code in Outlook but it kept reverting (which is a flaw in Outlook as far as I'm concerned).

My speed tests are about the same as they've always been and my actual download rates indicate the tests are representative -- so no problems with this for me.

Hi all,
New here and new to EVDO, but do have experience with picture compression on wireless internet, i.e. AT&T EDGE.

With AT&T, you could turn compression on and off in the software, AND set rudimentary levels of compression. Since I was in the boonies and didn't care about quality of pix most of the time, I set it to fairly high. Bad picture for sure, but better overall speed (200-230kbps, ick!)

With Alltel EVDO, I now am getting great speed most of the time (900+), and even with pictures showing from 1.1.1.x, I have not seen much, if any, quality reduction as of today.

NOTE: With the AT&T software, you could always type CTRL-F5 (a form of page refresh), and the pictures would reload WITHOUT COMPRESSION. That worked on here just a few minutes ago, so that must be a browser function.

So... if you get reduced quality pix, reload the page with "ctrl-F5" and you should get a normal download from the original URL (not the proxy 1.1.1.x). It doesn't solve all the other speed issues, but at least you can get a full image if the one you originally got is fuzzy.

This technique will not affect the alltel proxy. Every connection to the url is intercepted by the proxy server, and the images sent to your computer from the proxy. If your url request is one that the proxy does not have in it's cache, then you will wait while the proxy caches it before relaying it to your computer.
If your url request results in some kind of web page that the proxy does not understand, it will alter it before sending the results back to you. I have work related websites that were broken by the proxy.
The ONLY thing that helps is to get alltel to remove the proxy, probably by getting Mobile IP on your account, and set on the card. You may see a speed decrease from what you had prior to all this mess starting.
If you do a speedtest.net speed test, you can see why. All your website requests are being funneled through the Kansas site that has the proxy.
You may get around the proxy, but you will probably still be routed through the Kansas site.
