Hi there Everybody,
Well here I am awaiting my Laptop to arrive so I can get started with EVDO. SInce I work on a Cruise Ship and only get two days a week max to have this service avalable to me I am very anxious for Saturday to roll around...I hope the San Juan will eventually be part of the Network as well as its one of my Ports of Call.
I have a very simple question....
I have a PC5740 card and I will be using it in the Miami, FL area which, according to the maps, have very adequate coverage. What can I expect when I see this service in action for the first time? Fast Page Loads? Fast dowwloads? I come from a wired broadband enviroment so I am used to the speed..I am wondering how the wireless performance will be...If anyone could answer this under the assumption that I have a good signal...that would be great...
Thanks!

Hi Steve,
I have had EVDO since Sep 20, so I am not an expert. But, I also am used to a wired broadband environment. My experience, with a strong EVDO signal, is speed that is a few seconds short of wired broadband. About the best I have gotten on a good signal, averages about 700 Kb down and 100Kb up. I am not a gamer nor do I do music or video downloads, so the small extra time does not cause me a problem.
We travel in an RV and that is also the main reason we got EVDO because when we are not in our house we will rarely be in an EVDO area. We go in the RV to get AWAY from those congested areas. What the service DOES do for us when traveling is 24/7 access to National Access speeds. Much less than EVDO but is generally available (with a boosted antenna) to us in most places we go.
Good luck with it

EVDO is awesome in my opinion. I and wife gave up on landline services 10 years ago and are glad we did. To me EVDO has some drawbacks latency is one of them but I don't care about that part. Not a gamer anyways. But the connectivity is great and the 100 kbps uplink is not bad for some. The downlink is great I average on my Dell Latitude CPx with a Sprint AC580 card about 700 to 900 kbps. Some adjustments involved tho. So for me EVDO is cheaper than cable or DSL in my area and I am not tied to a landline. Lastly Comcast sucks in Denver plus Speak Easy wants an arm and a leg for their service if you don't have Qwest service. Mobility is GREAT! Amen. _________________ EVDO Addict. |
