I just purchased an MBR1000 and set it up for two laptops purchased in the last year - a Dell and an Apple which both have "N."

In both cases I am having trouble getting any range at all. When I have the router sitting right next to either laptop my signal strength is at or below 65%. I go into the next room and it drops to mid 30s. In parts of the rest of my house the signal is gone all together.

I switched to use just a G connection and it was slightly worse. Oddly enough my old (3 years old) Linksys G was giving me significantly greater range - throughout my entire house.

The review seemed to indicate that this device had remarkable range - what am I doing wrong here?

Help!

Keep in mind that 802.11n and 802.11g signals are relative.

A 50% signal on an 802.11n connection could be 150mbps, where as the same % on g is only 27mbps. And don't trust windows, it's about as good at calculating signal as my 2 year old is at doing algebra.

If you have the utility for the card manufacture (intel, broadcom, dell, etc.) use it to get some RSSI or SNR readings.

Also, tray other channels and turn off other 2.4 Ghz gear.
