|
|
I have my Sierra Compass 597 USB modem plugged into a Vista laptop. How do I share this internet connection with an XP laptop?
[EDIT: I figured out that something with Sprint prevented the laptop from making any other connections from any source, LAN or wireless card. I called Sprint tech support who confirmed this. The only suggested solution was buying a Linksys or Kyocera router.
SOLUTION: The work around I found was going into Sprint SmartView, disabling it as the WiFi default controller, also disabling the 2 rules that disconnected other connections and setting the options to maintaining existing connection. ICS worked easily after that, just follow the CNET video instructions for laptop hotspot.]

Thats the XP version I found... Should be approx. the same in Vista, couldn't find one on vista maybe I missed it.
People here have talked about ICS, there is at least several threads I've read mentioning it but I don't recall a complete walkthrough.
http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/r20074687-Share-EVDO-with-Vista-ICS-PLEASE-HELP
Maybe that will help you as well. He has a problem but he shows how he has his setup.
I can't find a link to a walkthrough for ICS... Ill dig around some more or maybe someone else can be more precise then me
I have not used ICS myself and don't plan on trying it. I am considering a router so I can get wireless with wire'd card
One thing I was thinking about was setting it to NDIS mode and bridging connections... have not tried this. I do know it wont let you bridge with DUN mode. |

With the host Vista laptop connected to the internet with the Compass 597 USB modem, I set up an ad hoc network, trying both no security and WEP. The client XP laptop is able to see the ad hoc wireless network, but cannot get a valid IP address, gets the 169 address. Only one time the XP laptop got a 192 address, and connected to the internet for about 5 seconds before disconnecting from the ad hoc network.
Would really appreciate help on this. |

This is the best MS Knowledged Base Article on ICS - 238135. It also has links is to several more specific ICS Knowledge Base files.
Reason many aren't jumping into this thread is that most who have experimented with Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) threw up their hands before solving the puzzle. _________________ Vista64 & EX720 |

I actually just went through this to connect my Wii to my lappy. I know it's not the same thing, but I think the process would be the same. It took me only a couple of minutes to do, once I got proper instructions. My Aircard is the USB type, so I had an ethernet jack available.
1) I connected my Wii to laptop with a CAT6 crossover cable (must make sure it is a crossover since you will not be using a router).
2) Go To : "Start" ; "Connect to:"; "Show all Connections"
3) Click "New Connection Wizard" NOTE: NOT "network setup wizard" I made this mistake.
4) Follow Steps, answer common sense questions about what you want to use it for etc....
5) Enjoy.
Note: I am running XP, not Vista so your experience may be a bit different, but should be along the same lines.
If I am missing something let me know. |

Matt, you got balls just to own up to successfully getting the connection. Makes you an invaluable resource. I bought a crossover cable from www.egghead.com and will try ICS again. I have an XP laptop that I want to connect through my Vista laptop (Vista one has an EX720 datacard). _________________ Vista64 & EX720 |

I'm on a biz trip won't be able to experiment much this week.
Compass597, were you able to stay connected or does the client XP laptop still disconnect from the ad hoc network after 5 seconds or so? _________________ Vista64 & EX720 |
