Hi, this is my first post. I like the site and it looks active.

I have a dir450 router with a kpc650 verizon evdo card. I want to upgrade to a rev A setup. Can I use the usb port on the router to connect a usb evdo modem? Or should I just get a pc5750 card?

I like the idea of a usb device so it will work with whatever computer I happen to have in front of me. Realistically I rarely take the card out of the router, and my laptop has a pcmcia slot so I'm ok if I want to go mobile.

If anyone knows the answer I would appreciate it, I haven't been able to find the info online anywhere.

Thank you,

John D

I google searched your router + specifications and got this

http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=524

Quote:
Compatible Service Providers in USA* Compatible 1xEV-DO Internet PC Adapters*
• Sprint
• Verizon Wireless

• Kyocera KPC 650 (Sprint & Verizon - Cardbus)
• Kyocera KPC 680 (Verizon - ExpressCard) [requires Cardbus adapter]
• Novatel V620 (Sprint & Verizon - Cardbus)
• Novatel Merlin S720 (Sprint - Cardbus)
• Novatel Ovation U720 (Sprint - USB)
• Sprint PCS Connection Card PC-5740 (Sprint - Cardbus)
• Sierra AC 580 (Sprint & Verizon - Cardbus)
• Sierra AC 595 (Sprint - Cardbus)
• Sierra AC 5220 (Sprint - Cardbus)
• Verizon PC-5740 (Verizon - Cardbus)
• Verizon PC-5750 (Verizon - Cardbus)
• Pantech PX-500 (Sprint - Cardbus)

Novatel Ovation U720 (Sprint - USB)
Thats the only USB I see

The U727 is a popular USB card now and is the sibling of the u720. So I'm thinking they would have added that with a firmware but I wouldn't bank on that!

I will look for some firmware update history and see if they added anymore

EDIT*
Just found your latest firmware and the older ones
http://support.dlink.com/products/view.asp?productid=DIR%2D450
Version 1.03 is the latest and it states: Added support for Verizon PC5750.
Which is on that list I posted above... So I'm gonna say that, that list is up-to-date and the U720 is the only USB card that it can see... And only the Sprint version of that.

EDIT2**
retails for $209.99... 3g's MBR1000 is not much more. Guess those routers really are $$$$. That brings me closer to purchasing one from 3g...

Thanks for the reply!

I found some of that after I posted and was bummed to see that there weren't more usb devices supported. I think I'll go with the 5750 as it's in stock at the local verizon store and I know the firmware for the router has been upgraded. I'm excited about the increased speed!

what kind of gains can be had from upgrading to the 5750 from the 5740? i have a 5740 and during good times i see 1700 kbps for hours on end. with all things being equal should i always see better speed with 5750?
