It seems like most people rarely get above 500 for uploads in that list... mine managed to peak at like 800 up once. Shocked

I get about 1.1 - 1.2 down and 400 up and I live in a rural area (trees) and am a few miles away from the nearest tower. I do not use an antenna or amp and this beats the heck out of my Wildblue satellite performance. I m not sure if my figures are average or not but they suit me just fine.

you can't get over 3.1 meg down, so I'm not sure how accurate the results are....if you run into a small pause, once in a while speed-test.net will overcompensate and bloat the results like that.

you might want to due multiple tests just to make sure that that result is accurate.

that pretty much confirms what I've suspected--likely, what happened was, one or two packets got dropped, Speedtest.net screwed this up, and your speed as artificially inflated.

I once managed to get my speed to measure in at 1600k+...the best I know I can get is 1288k (and that was last August)....however, this wasn't an actual speed, it was bloated up to this.

It's important to know what all of these speeds mean. Someone can fill in or update my reasoning:

Transmission speed is fixed.

Packet transfer which the speedtest sites use to calculate their shown speeds can vary and is dependent upon many things on the net just as traffic flow in a city or on a freeway can vary.

Data transfered depends upon the software and hardware compression routines. A packet can contain the contents of a text file or compressed data which might be 10 times denser when uncompressed.

In the old modem compression days we say where hardware could compress and transfer a one meg file faster than it could transfer a one meg file of compressed data because it wasted time trying to compress that and could not.

Two days ago I used Logmein pro to down load a 175 Meg file. It uses some amazing compression. It downloaded the entire uncompressed file in less than 5 minutes. A typical down load from other sources not using Logmein would be 3 Megs a minute not 35 Megs. The speedometer showed at times 780 KB/s for the download.

Typically speedtest show a one meg download speed.
