Many of you probably haven't heard of a SlingBox.
It is a $250 box that hooks up to your TV, Cable Box or Tivo and hooks up to your home internet. I bought one at Best Buy (CompUSA has them too, OR you can purchase directly from Sling Media) via The SlingViewer application, you can watch YOUR TVchannels wherever YOUare located. If you hook up the SlingBox to a Tivo, you can watch your recorded programs wherever you have an internet connection, you can also watch live television on your laptop from any location. It is just like having the remote with you (no need to bring the remote though), you can even change channels, tell Tivo to record something, or anything else that you can do if you were in front of your TV.
Below is a screenshot. We have a mini review at:
EVDOinfo Review of SlingBox

SlingBox update.
At the location where I tested it, it did work, BUT the bandwidth needed for good quality really wasn't available. It was streaming at 200K - 300K or so. Picture wasn't perfect, it was below average. I plugged into the hotel's ethernet and then it was streaming at 800K - 900K and was perfect.
So, the current EVDO implementation may not be perfect for this technology. More importantly, this type of streaming really shouldn't be used over EVDO. It really can degrade performance for others on your cell and if everyone was doing it, performance would really be slower for everyone else. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

The SlingBox may work well with Sprint's new EVDO phones. Sites like www.zoovision.com and one other that has an app called Orb work well with 1xRTT phones. Only time will tell. _________________ EVDO Addict. |

| Orb.com looks interesting. And it's apparently free. Also works with Tivo media. |

Interesting tidbit in RCR Wireless News Magazine today....
| Quote: | | A Suncom Wireless representative in the audience noted the regional carrier was looking at different pricing model for the data-heavy service, claiming their testing showed the service consumed 50 megabytes of data over a 2 hour period and that 2,000 mobile SlingBox devices operating at once would "crash our network". |

| I've been running one of these gagets for about 6 months on my sprint card at work. Got to keep up with these Cardinal games. Every time they release a new firmware and software update the pictures seems to get better and better. I can stream at home at about 2000kpps. remotely i get about between 300 and 500kbps depending on network conditions. My upload speed at home though is 512kbps. Thought about upgrading to the 1meg upload charter package but I don't think it will be worth it until rev A rolls into st louis because i usually only avg between 400 and 500k right now on the down with the sprint card. Another thing with the sling box is that it has 3 different inputs on the sling classic. I have my tivo running through the s-video and it also has a built in tuner so I run coax from an antenna for locals so I can swith over to that if my wife is watching the tivo. Eventually going to hook up some cctv cameras for remote viewing securits through it also, any video source can go through it. the new sling box pro cand pass HD content through it, won't be true HD but the picture is supposed to look alot better as I think you can stream on your LAN at about 4000kbps with that one. Here is a link to the new boxes.http://us.slingmedia.com/page/home |

Perhaps the problem will be resolved when the NFL sues Sprint and Verizon and SlingBox for rebroadcasting their programs? Cable TV will probably jump on board as Slingbox will be seen as cutting into their revenue stream for sales of more cable connections and reducing their advertising revenue. If ever there was a source of revenue for lawyers that exceeds suing for minor class action lawsuits, this should be one.
It may also prove to be a reason for firing employees who watch tv at the office rather than work!
Addendum: due to the affect on others of one or more people slinging their home TV around the world, I would hope that Sprint and Verizon take steps to prevent this on EVDO networks. |

| Assuming I put a sling box pro on my Dish networked tv at home...how many laptops and or PC's can access my sling box at one time? My daughter is in England and my son is away at college...would this be a way for them to stay connected to programs at home? or would this just be aggravting for me, when my daugther changes the channel to watch ONe Tree Hill, when I am in the middle of a football game? |

The sling box can only be accessed from one computer at a time. It does have a new feature to where the admin can disconnect whoever is watching it so he or she can access it. You will need more than one sling to do what you are looking to do.
As far as the post a couple up from this one about someone hope that sprint and verizon take action on this. Unlimited means unlimited as far as sprint is concerned. Sprint actually promotes streaming on their website, if you don't want people hogging your bandwith, go with verizon, they seem to be the ones terminateing people. I told the salesman what I would be doing with the card and he assured me it was fine. With the new technologies comeing out for EVDO , their should be plenty of bandwith to go around. Verizon just wants people to go with their V-cast and all the carriers have some sort of tv on their phones but I don't see you complaining about that. |

Jack, you're such a party-pooper
EDIT: I don't think the NFL is going to sue Sprint anytime soon--they're advertising partners (Sprint has the exclusive on NFL Mobile--and have you noticed the "Sprint Halftime Show" during telecasts?).
Sling and emerging similar technologies can't be stopped in their tracks. Content owners and bandwidth providers will be forced to take a forward-looking, adoptive stance to remain competitive. Remember when CD's sold well and downloading music was nearly always done illegally?

I've installed a PC into my car and use my Slingbox to stream XM Radio from DirecTV to my car, as well as an occasional news program. I normally use the audio only mode, as I only watch TV if I'm parked somewhere. This also conserves bandwidth, and I have not had any issues with over-usage.

I commend you on your creativity! That is a most excellent idea, as long as you're in an EVDO area, it'll work perfectly! |
