I have all but decided that I will be purchasing a panel antenna when the $$ gets right.

http://3gstore.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=603

Will this require a lightning surge protector if not used with an amp?

I'm going to try the antenna w/o amp first because I am getting around -90 RSSI as is on EVDO running the UM-150 w/ Alltel. If I need the amp, I will do that later.

the lightning surge protector is never a "required" purchase.

the decision to protect yourself against lightning is one the consumer has to make.

is your home/family worth protecting against the dangers of a fire caused by a lightning strike?

I understand that aspect. Everything I have seen referenced is that the lightning suppressor is to protect the amp. The question was if I'm not running an amp, is it still necessary?

I take it the answer is yes, which in retrospect, makes sense. If it protects the amp, it protects any other circuitry inline as well. Thank you for your response.
