| Hey, anyone know if Alltel is going to expand the EVDO network in Rural CO,NE,SD,WY areas!!! My work usually takes me from the colorado rockies to rural NE/SD/WY. I am currently in 69343 area and I am stuck with a 1x tower. Although it is not that slow, have been out here for 6 months and at firs it was really slow! Now, logging in @ 230.4 Kbps. Download speeds @ about 16 KBps...Tethering with Motorola Razr, usb modem....lame....(owell, company paid) Should I just pop for the $60/month & the USB Ucom adapter or whatever it is???? Or will it be a waste of money??? |

You're not going to see significant improvements by switching to a modem, but yes there will be some gain.
If you're stuck in 1x. Then you're stuck in 1x. That's all there is to it. It ain't gonna get any faster unless they upgrade the towers near you.
If there's an EVDO tower in range then get an antenna and amplifier in hopes of pulling in the signal.
Have you tried checking other internet providers to see what your options are? |

| I'm new to evdo service myself, but from what I've been reading you don't need an Alltel signal as they also use Sprint evdo service where available. I've seen posts about a roaming profile that can be tweaked, you might investigate that avenue... I haven't read anything that suggests better speed with a card, mainly I think it just frees up your phone for voice use ... |

Speaking personally from rural SD, my nearest tower is about 18 miles away. I only get 1x, approximately 100 kbps down and maybe 75 kbps up. I was told by Alltel tech support that you need to be within 7 to 10 miles of a tower in order to pick up the EVDO signal, no matter what your bars are otherwise. I had purchased an amp and tried that and it gave me 100% signal but still only 1x.
There is a rumor on the dslreports forum that Alltell is improving it's Axcess service and will be completed by May 7th. Anybody know anything about that? |
