|
|
Recently I got a used Novatel EX720 for a new Vista 64 based laptop. Since my download speeds appeared slower than they had been with my tweaked Novatel S720, it seemed a good time to consider tweaking again, which predicated my question, Have We Decided Tweaking Datacards Is No Longer Beneficial??. (thanks for the response, Fox)
When I ran TCP Analyzer I noticed Vista TCP/IP Auto-Tuning was holding my TCP receive window (RWIN) setting at 17520, as mentioned in Changing the RWIN Setting in Windows Vista. To explore the change I disconnected the Sprint Connection Manager v3.10.014, then disabled TCP/IP Auto-Tuning by entering "netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled" (don't enter quotes) at an Administrator command prompt (Start>Run>cmd>OK). I confirmed it was disabled by entering "netsh interface tcp show global", then restarted.
My www.dslreports.com/stest?flash=1 speed tests jumped from the 600-800 up range to 1400-1800. Guess I'll leave Vista TCP/IP Auto-Tuning disabled for a while and see if there are any untowardly effects.
While I also tried to reset the RWIN to 65536 after disabling TCP/IP Auto-Tuning, it did not seem to take. TCP Analyzer still shows it at 17520. Ergo, I haven't figured out specifically what caused the speed increase, but it's surely faster. Firefox pages load much more snappily and completely too.
Incidentally, to reenable TCP/IP Auto-Tuning, just go back to a command prompt and enter "netsh interface tcp set global autotuningl=normal". You can confirm it is reenabled with "netsh interface tcp show global".
I'd be interested to know if other Vista users who disable TCP/IP Auto-Tuning experience similar pickups. _________________ Vista64 & EX720 |

I just got my vista laptop about 2 weeks ago now. Before I started doing anything i followed the line of tips to do to vista. One of them was this disable auto-tuning. Also on the list was Disable Aero Theme and indexing, these are for trimming the RAM hogging not network obviously.
I never tested before I changed the auto-tuning things but I have noticed my Vista machine is much faster then my (still powerful as hell) alienware laptop XP sp2 machine.
Mine is Vista 32.
FYI Open 'CMD' (prompt)
| Code: | | netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled |
| Code: | | netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal |
I found my original 'tips and tricks' for vista from a website called pirillo but I can't seem to google it again sigh... |

Thanks for the tip ebiz. I will give it a whirl and see what happens? Have you upgraded to the lates vs. of smartview? I am currently running. I have been so busy with work and school latly I have been kinda disconnected from this forum. Have you set up multiple profiles under ##DATA? It appears that you can save the HA Address you desire now, unlike the 2nd Gen. of Sprint Connection manager. Have you played with any of the seetings in ##DATA, I notice there are all kinds of settings that you can select/deselect there. Wounder how they effect performance of connection. Kinda nervous to tool around here due to my past expierence of making not functional and having to have a long session with Sprint tech support to get me back online. I am a little aprehensive to just blindly change settings this time around.
Please advise.
Thanks,
Tim _________________ Vista64,EX720 |

I'm new to Vista 64 and decided to use SCM Novatel 3.10.014 until I hear smartview has more bugs worked out. Biz doesn't give me the luxury of serving as a guinea pig right now.
There is more on this speed fix at www.evdoforums.com/thread9080.html . The threads kind of got mixed. Let us know if you see a difference. _________________ Vista64 & EX720 |

1. Well I upgraded to the latest vs. of Sprintview.
2. Since the 2nd interation of SCM to present (Sprint Smartview) I have noticed after booting up my computer, and starting Sprint application. The application does not see my ex720 Card. I have to shut down the App. and eject the card. start the App back up and reinsert the card for it to see it. I think if I started vista, then Start Sprint Smartview, and insert the card, the app sees the card. Do you see this issue with ur card and vista 64 Ebiz?
3. I like the fact that I can now change the HA Address, or more like when I hit save, the New HA Address is stored. Would like to more details on the options on the HA Address profiles and settings. Maybe I will have to call Sprint and see If I can find a tech that can go into detail about the options and screens there.
4. So far I have not seen any major issues with latest vs. of Sprint Smartview.
5. I have not been doing much with speed tests, as to I don't have the greatest signal strength in my area, fluctioates between 80 to 94 dbm, depending on how I have mny computer positioned.
6. Would be nice if Sprint would cover my area a little better as I am in kinda a dead spot for cell phone signal too. But it has been getting better over the years.
7. ebiz, you can do the xp teak that opens up the amount of data that can flow under the port settings. Maximiz that number in the pull down menu. This works on vista. _________________ Vista64,EX720 |

ANSWERS to previous post.
2. Nope. SCM Novatel 3.10.014 seems to work fine with Vista64 & my EX720.
7. That is what disabling Vista's TCP/IP Auto-Tuning does. See the article in this post, www.evdoforums.com/thread9080-6.html _________________ Vista64 & EX720 |

Here is the truest measure of speed - the good old Task Manager (taskmgr.exe in the Windows>System 32 folder). It shows the bandwidth at 3.1 MB and shows the percent of that I am getting.
