|
|
When I wrote the MBR1000 Router review, one of my biggest gripes was about the "dance" that was necessary to use the SGNL button, and how the resulting signal strength information wasn't that useful (because there are only 4 lights).
With the latest 1.2 Firmware for the MBR1000, you no longer need to remember a complex dance routine, and the resulting information can be more useful than before.
In case you haven't read the official firmware notes, or in case you missed the info about improvement to signal strength reading -- here's a quote:
| Quote: | SNGL button functionality has changed. Holding the button at boot time does not activate signal strength mode any more, now the button can be held for 5 seconds at any time to enable signal strength mode.
The signal strength mode selection LED (next to the SGNL button) will
be on when in signal strength mode. If the active modem does not support simultaneous data operations and signal monitoring, the data connection will be terminated. Otherwise, the data operations will continue. The 4 multi-function LEDs (WPS, WLAN, MODEM, SGNL) will
operate in signal strength mode. Pressing the SGNL button again will re-enter normal operating mode.
The 4 LEDs will show 8 signal strength levels. If an LED is blinking, it means the signal strength is at the next level. For example, two lit and one blinking LED means the signal strength being reported is 5/8th of the maximum level. |

This is way good news.
Thinking outside the box (and perhaps even outside the warehouse)...
Perhaps a better idea:
I wish that you could kick it into "SS" mode (Signal Strength Mode) via a router setup page, where the router would always stay in Signal Strength Mode (surviving a power down).
In this mode, the WPS, WLAN, AND MDM lights would light up orange to indicate something is not working.
That way, you could always look at the router and see the complete status and signal strength at the same time!
In my case, for my MBR-1000 #1, I could look into the rear view mirror of my PT Cruiser, and get the complete story of whats going on.
In fact, if this was the default mode of operation, you would net need anything on a setup page, and the signal button on the top could be used for something entirely different, perhaps even a power off switch
Just an idea.
Someone what to send this one into CradlePoint? I think I am on there ignore list, after submitting too many ideas.

thats hilarious. and with you on there, that makes two of us!
problem with your idea is not all devices support simultaneous signal monitoring and data connection and "If the active modem does not support simultaneous data operations and signal monitoring, the data connection will be terminated".
bummer.
i've asked CP to consider telling us which devices support signal info/data transfer, because it may be a deciding factor for some new device purchases...
but alas... i must be on that "ignore these guys" list.

Ya... Still, having a perm SS mode would be cool for those of us that do have a modem that supports it.
I'm having too much fun watching MBR-1000 #2, in SS mode, and would really like to be able to get #1 doing this in the PT cruiser, so I can look out the rear view mirror and get a real time signal strength reading.
I can turn it off and on remotely from the front of the PT.... Perhaps I can extend the wires from the switch on top to the front of the PT... or wait a sec... Perhaps I can modify the unit so when power is present, it throws the switch? oh... for 5 seconds... I wonder what happens in SS mode when the modem looses a connection?
Oh come on CradlePoint!!! Give us a setting to turn this on as a default!!!
We promise we will use this new feature only for good and never for evil!!!
(needing a halo emoticon about now)
Now if we can just get Wilson to build in an automatic passthough to the 3 watt direct connect amp, so when the unit is not powered, the antenna connection still works, we would have it made!!!
