| I recently signed up for VZW by assuming liability for an older account and have great service using a USB 720 and a Cradlepoint CTR350 router. I was just informed a new WISP is available in my area and my neighbor now gets 1.5 down and 680 up with this new service, which costs 49/month and has no data cap. My VZW service varies but I have achieved speeds of 1.2 down and 400 up with a signal strength of -60 dBm and I am grandfathered with unlimited data and not subject to the 5 GB cap. The thing is for the type of surfing I do on the internet (browsing and email) my present EVDO service is more than meeting my needs. I am not a heavy user and generally do not use more than 5 GB per month. |

How did you manage to get internet from verizon without the 5 gb limit? I'm curious. _________________ - Henry |

Are you paying 60$ a month for Verizon? Even if they are the same, what I would do is to wait until your Verizon Plan runs out of its contract. Then I would switch over to the WISP. I'm guessing it will be faster and it will also have lower ping times. _________________ - Henry |

That's a great point. I vacation for two weeks each summer near Houlton, ME (rural) and all we have is the owner's dial-up, which also ties up the phone line and is very slow. There is a cell tower nearby (US Cellular) but the VZW street map shows coverage, although not EVDO. I have also stayed in hotels in NY/NJ where they have internet but charge 10 bucks per hour or per session. Obviously I could bypass that by using the 720. |

I assumed liability of the account (transfer) from someone who was already one year into their contract. VZW allows for transfer of an account where the present account holder avoids having to pay an ETF and the new account holder inherits the existing account as is, with only a one-year commitment required. When the VZW CSR went over the account particulars, she advised I have unlimited data. I challenged her with what I have recently read about the 5 GB monthly limit, with accounts being either throttled or having to pay extra if you go over the limit. She responded by saying this account pre-dated either clause and I was grandfathered. I would never hit 5 GB but when my son gets home from college next month, he can certainly reach that amount the way he uses the internet. |
