I recently switched to Alltel service and am using a UM150. I'm currently in an area with no Alltel coverage, but Sprint EVDO is available. I was told by the sales person that Alltel roams on Sprint's EVDO. When I first attempted to connect, it connected without a problem and was VERY fast (clearly it was EVDO). Within a few minutes I was disconnected. When I attempted to reconnect, a pop-up window appeared during the authentication step. The message said "Access was denied because the username and/or password was invalid on the domain". So, I did some searching on this forum and found a post which gave a username as "alltel.net" and a password as "alltel." In the Alltel Wireless Internet Setup section, I entered that username and password. It worked! Only problem is it's now 1x and not EVDO. Any idea how I can get past the the username/password error message without being forced onto 1x?

I have the same problem, but the username/password did not work for me.

I was told that Sprint has been refusing Alltel roaming for some, and to unplug, and try again in 3 hours (and to expect this from time to time) untill sprint gets off there behind and fixes the problem.

As far as locking to EVDO, here is what I got from an Alltel data specialist:

1. Open up AccessLink, but don't connect.
2. Press Control-D
3. In the dialogue box that appears, type "diagsmsi" without the quotes
4. In the newest connection software support menu you will see three buttons on it manual activation, MOBILE IP and field test. Choose Mobile IP.

Mobile IP off = EVDO ONLY

Mobile IP preferred = Whatever is preferred

Mobile IP only = no EVDO

Hope this helps. Please let us know how it goes!

Joe

I think Joe meant to tell you to select HDR only instead of Mobile IP. High Data Rate (HDR) = EvDO. Selecting Mobile IP Only may cause you problems when you return to an Alltel area if you line isn't provisioned for Mobile IP.

Well, actually, no I did not. HDR is apparently not available on the newer versions of the software. At least with some devices, you get a different screen.

I understand that there are certain software versions and devices that don't have the HDR option, but QLM version 4.7.4 for the UM150 does. I don't know what software version the OP has, however.

I'm not following how setting the card to MIP would force it to EvDO. Are you saying this because Sprint uses only MIP? My understanding is that MIP/SIP are two different ways to establish/authenticate packet data connections. Are you using this as a means to trick the card?

I have 4.7.4 and a UM150, and mine does not. Others have reported that they also do not have the HDR option.

All I am saying the options and settings I reported this came from an AllTel engineer, and has also been posted on the internet. Other than that, I have no idea.

The username/password did not help, however, after several go-round's with AllTel, someone had me go to the tools menu, and set the IMSI (MIN) number to ten zeros, and SID to five zeros, press ok, let it re-activate, then set it back to the original values and reactivate again. Now I am finally connecting in Sprint roaming mode, and in RevA mode Smile

tvstracker, my apologies for continuing to hijack your thread. I've not had this problem with my Alltel card but my dad had this problem with his Sprint card when trying to EvDO-roam on Alltel. In his case rebooting his laptop solved the access-denied problem.

Joe, my mistake. I thought from these more recent posts that forcing to HDR was now a possibility with the UM150 (but obviously it's not):

http://www.evdoforums.com/thread8825.html

I've searched this forum and the Internet and can't seem to find a thread about using Mobile IP Only to force to EvDO. If you can point me to one I'd appreciate it.

Otherwise, for the time being I guess I'll continue to consider myself lucky to have an old PC5750 that seems to have all the options.

Sorry, I wish I remembered all the links. I remember it took a lot of searching. Please do not think that I am making it up just because I cannot cite the URLs that I found. I just jotted down the info and kept on looking for tweaks for the UM150 and the connection spftware). Sadly, there was little to find (unlike for my U727/Sprint Connection Manager).

I cannot even remember if I found it here, or on a web search. I know I searched for "diagsmsi", among many other keywords.
