|
|
I currently have a PX-500 and sprint service. I love it to death, great speeds 90% of the time (knock wood). However, my current setup for my network requires me to have a pc on 24/7, and i would like eliminate that computer.
I have a pc(old one P3 500mhz w/ XP pro), and my PX-500 goes into that via a PCI to PCIMA adapter, and i have a 1000gb network all made of switches, that whats comprises my network.
Currently on my desktop which does not have the connection, i get a nice 130-250 constant ping in WoW. Now if i was to goto with a router, would that lag possibly go up? Wouldn't expect it to decrease by much if any but would it go up? Sorry if this was kinda a awkward question. |

Nope, won't affect your speed or ping time once configured correctly.
But if you end up in the same shape as me, you'll just be happy when your router works.
Mine randomly dumps people from the network, and stops accepting/sending packets. These linksys routers really are terrible. Every other linksys product has worked wonderful for me but these things are awful. _________________ Merlin S720 |

Yea, read the blog article about the Linksys WRT54G3G before considering this as an option.
The only other current generation EVDO router that supports the PX-500, is the Kyocera KR2...which is actually manufactured by CradlePoint, a company that I highly recommend! They make the MBR1000 which in my opinion is the best [home] EVDO network on the market. Infact the only major difference between the KR2 & MBR1000, is that the KR2 has a PCMCIA slot...well & of course the exterior design. |

Oh wow, i never knew that KR2 has a PCMICA slot, i'm definetly sold on that, due to the fact it has all 3 options!
Since this is my final year on the PX-500 card, i'll probly end up upgrading, to a USB or Exprescard! |

I recommend going with USB, its the wisest purchase in my opinion. This way you don't have to play "card-slot roulette" when buying a new laptop |

The only thing that would and probably will keep me from getting a USB is that there is more lag.
I compared my PX-500 on my laptop here via a PCIMIA to PC-express, against his Sprint USB card, and my card showed a good 30ms latency difference. |

I too would strongly consider the KR2 instead of the WRT54G3G, even though I have the latter. The multi form factor support at effectively the same price is too good to pass up.
However, if you come across a WRT54G3G at a great price don't poo on it right away. I've had mine in continuous service both at home and in the car (while in motion) with almost none of the wacky problems reported here in terms of stability. My router stays up for weeks and months at a time between reboots.
Something is definitely afoot in the manufacturing plants that turn out these units as some of them have pretty serious problems. _________________ --Larry |
