| Quote: | Company Increases Portfolio of Intellectual Property to 28 Patents
SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 27, 2005--Novatel Wireless, Inc. (Nasdaq:NVTL - News), a leading provider of wireless broadband access solutions, today announced it has secured its twenty-eighth patent. This patent provides for a wireless radio frequency modem designed to operate in conjunction with a host device, sharing a central processing unit and memory with the host device, where principal modem functions are distributed between the modem and the host device.
The patent teaches a cost-effective architecture for use in devices, such as laptops or wireless routers, which connect multiple wired and wireless computers to the Internet. Previously, Novatel Wireless announced that it had filed for several patent protections in connection with its fixed-mobile convergence technology, including its Ovation(TM) 3G Multimedia Application Console portfolio and Conversa(TM) software suite.
"Novatel Wireless has placed a great deal of energy into wireless research and development activities," said Peter Leparulo, chief executive officer of Novatel Wireless. "We are honored to have received our twenty-eighth patent. Novatel Wireless continues to expand its research and development efforts, ensuring we remain the leader in providing advanced wireless broadband data solutions."
The latest patent was developed by Dr. Slim Souissi, Novatel Wireless' chief technology officer and an Edwin Armstrong Fellow of Novatel Research Labs.
ABOUT NOVATEL RESEARCH LABS
Novatel Research Labs is an unincorporated research arm and honorarium of Novatel Wireless, which promotes inventions at Novatel Wireless and in the telecommunications industry, administers Novatel Wireless' intellectual property rights, and sponsors technical publications and white papers. Novatel Research Labs also awards two fellowships, Edwin Armstrong Fellowships and Ernest Shackleton Fellowships, on the basis of intellectual property attainment in connection with Novatel Wireless' intellectual property program. |
So what does this patent mean? Does anyone have a clue as to what is actually covered in it? _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

Well what it sounds like is bad - like they're going to take EVDO circuits and take them in the same direction land-line modems went...with the so-called "WinModems".
It means basically gutting the EVDO circuits and supplementing them with motherboard CPU/software functions. Which limits which operating systems your modem will work with because half of it it tied to operating-system-specific software.
It's crap.
It will let motherboard/laptop manufacturers put EVDO stuff in cheaper. But at a cost in flexibility and probably quality (Winmodems tend to suck wind).
I'll make a prediction right now: the KPC650 card will probably end up being the best EVDO card ever made at the current speed levels anyhow. |
