Industry-First Network Traffic Prioritization Software Enhances Simultaneous Upload/Download Throughput Speeds of Broadband Modems by up to 400 Percent
LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Novatel Wireless, Inc., a leading provider of wireless broadband solutions, today announced the launch of NovaSpeed™, a proprietary, patent pending software capable of enhancing the speed and performance of its wireless broadband modems up to 400 percent, while enabling simultaneous upload and download data transfer.
Novatel Wireless developed NovaSpeed to enhance the speed and performance of its mobile broadband modems through the use of an industry-first network traffic prioritization protocol. By enabling the modem to monitor network conditions and regulate the concurrent uploads and downloads in real time, NovaSpeed enables the user to run multiple applications simultaneously. Depending on channel conditions, lab tests of the software have shown up to a 400 percent increase in throughput speeds when the broadband channel is being used for multiple applications.
“Simultaneous downloading has become a critical functionality for mobile services and applications whose success depends on the quality of the end user experience, such as those geared towards entertainment,” said Sterling Pratz, chief executive officer of Autonet Mobile, a technology partner of Novatel Wireless. “One example is a family with two kids in the car surfing and gaming over the Internet at the same time. You’ve got to have the bandwidth and IP traffic optimization to support these applications without buffering and choppy video feeds.”
“Streaming video and online gaming are prime examples of bandwidth intensive activities that require efficient management of the cellular link in order to deliver a great experience for the end user,” said Brad Weinert, president of Novatel Wireless. “NovaSpeed is a significant advancement in wireless data traffic management technology that reinforces our commitment to innovation and will continue to differentiate our high-speed data products from any others on the market.”
NovaSpeed will ship as a standard feature on all new Novatel Wireless mobile data products and will be available in future firmware upgrades for existing models. |
Please note that this will become a standard feature in firmware for all Novatel Cards. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

| Sounds intriguing. I wonder how something like this as a firmware upgrade could work with any carrier. Is it maybe something that will be available to carriers or that end users can directly apply? |

I have a question about this. Today I decided to download the new sprint connection manager just for the heck of it. see how it performed. I happened to go to the tab that said check for updates. It said that there were two new updates available. however, i don't think they were sprint ones. one i believe was malware crush and the other was a novatel firmware upgrade. is it the novaspeed? when i go to mobile device tab (or something like that) it says that the firmware verision is 114. is that the latest? _________________ - Henry |

I believe 114 is the latest.
When I tried the new "everything manager", it updated the firmware to from 112 to 114, and did a PRL update.
I switched back to the old connection manager. It downgraded my PRL (I am now checking the box for no PRL updates), and the firmware 114 stayed.
I also recently did a factory reset of the modem, and the firmware stayed at 114.
I do not know if the firmware 114 has novaspeed, however, I want to recall that it does.

I would really like to hope that Novatel and the various router companies are working *closely* during this development. Based on how router support and device firmware are closely tied I would bet most, if not all, combo installs would be left hanging after the upgrade. _________________ --Larry |

I also updated my firmware via SmartView to 114 (from 112). I have not noticed any speed increase. In fact, even thought the modem was recently activated, I have noticed a speed decrease since late last year and January on the speedtests (but nothing directly related to the firmware upgrade).
Interestingly, I also saw that there were two upgrades available but based on the earlier post re possible malware, I did a custom install - and doing that, only the Novatel firmware upgrade appeared. As a result, I would suggest folks use the custom install rather than automatic just in case.
Any more info on the firmware situation from those in the know would be great.
Thanks! |

Folks,
Been a user for 2 yrs now I use a novel 720 card with the linksys router.
I got the letter in the mail today dated April 11,2008 telling me to update my firmware to support something called SprintSpeed. It states the card will have degraded performance in Indianapolis and Cincinnati without the upgrade.
These must be the first cities it is being tried in.
It also states I should perform this by May 1st, 2008, so I one would assume it is in the current firmware download.
It also states download the newest Sprint SmartView to get the latest Firmware upgrade.
So there you have the details.
Happy sprint user! |
