Fresh from the CTIA Show...

UPDATE: Full review of Compass 597 available -- includes video and photos!

We spotted the new Sprint Compass 597 USB EVDO Modem attached to a MacBook Air:

Even more impressive was when we noticed the Mac OSX version of Sprint SmartView Connection Manager running on Leopard!

The Sprint Compass 597 is slated to replace the Sprint 595U soon. Here is a size comparison shot with 595U, Compass 597 and CDU680:

More on this, later! Wink

Sprint's Compass 597 USB EVDO Modem comes with a MicroSD slot as well as an antenna jack. We'll test our adapter cables when we get a 597 to our warehouse:

Yes, it is very nice device, we like it a lot. We even tested it with the 2.1 firmware, but it did not work with the CradlePoint PHS300 router.

EDIT: it turns out, our router was NOT running latest firmware. i forgot i rolled back to earlier version for some other internal testing.

It turns out that cradlepoint was at CTIA with a PHS300 that did have firmware 2.1, they plugged in a compass 597 and it worked.

So, as long as no firmware changes happen to production compass 597 units, there is a a pretty good chance the compass will be supported at launch

He wants to know if you can use ##DATA to access the cards internal settings, in order to change HAs, etc.

This 'feature' is no longer available on Windows or Mac OS.

I had no idea the Compass was just released. Walked into a Sprint store last night and ended up buying one.

However, activation seems to have failed. Sad

I called Sprint service and they are recommending waiting for 4 hours before trying again. They seem to think the activation has been initiated but it takes time (4 hours?) to get through the system.

I'll post again when I find out.

So much for immediate gratification. Smile

There have been many problems with Sprint's activation/provisioning servers the last few weeks. Waiting 4 hours will no always fix the problem, BUT it does allow the operator to get you off the phone.

We activate our Sprint cards before we ship them so that customers don't have to waste hours on the phone in order to get online. If you get too frustrated and cannot get a resolution, return it and get it from us (we are less $$ too) and your card will arrive activated, ready to use and with a CD that we burn with the latest Sprint software for Mac & Windows.
